I’ve only used this with a brush. A little goes a long way! If you just touch a damp brush to the block, you get a super dark wash, like an extremely smooth, matte sharpie. One of the smoothest and darkest wet drawing mediums I’ve ever seen. It’s shares some properties with graphite washes and some with ink washes. If you really thin it out you can get a full range of beautiful, smooth grays. It doesn’t come with a holder, so I bought a 99 cent plastic box that clicks closed. It might be a nice addition to a travel watercolor kit.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this medium. It's rather fun to play with and if you have a loose expressive style, you'll probably love it. I'm more of a realist and trying to control your results with this medium might be a bit frustrating for those like me. But if you want to experiment and push yourself to be more loose, this will do it! If flows beautifully with water but when dry is can leave a rather grainy effect- sometimes when you don't want it to- other times that grainy look works fantastically. I say give it a try and see what you think!

I used this product for graphics and it is just so wonderful

Washes go on a little darker than they ultimately dry but there don't seem to be any additives to the block that cause scaling or salting the paper. Drawing over dried wash with ink pen or brush is easy. I wish that it was a little larger.

Very satisfied with everything

Makes nice marks thin or thick, light or heavy, delicate or bold, and can be used with water for a different effect. Gets on your fingers like chalk, but cleans off easily and doesn't make a mess elsewhere.
