desertcart.com Home sounds, animal sounds, big and little sounds, people sounds, and musical sounds all share time in this 30-minute educational--and entertaining--video. Outdoor shots of roaring rivers, a train chugging through town, and jackhammers tearing up a sidewalk are interspersed with sounds captured on a simple indoor set (like kids sneezing, laughing, playing drums) and in someone's house (where telephones ring, babies cry, and blenders whir). A pleasant narrator adds to the experience by "conversing" with the audience with simple phrases like "This is the sound of a blender. Sometimes it can be loud." As with the other thoughtfully conceived videos in the Baby's First Impressions series, the makers seem to have as much fun taking viewers from scene to scene as they do presenting their educational material: frames glide, split, or whisk away; light classical music gives way to jiving big band numbers. While perhaps best suited for toddlers from 1 to 3 years old, 11 new "Mystery Sounds" near the film's end will challenge the 4- and 5-year-olds (and the adults, for that matter). --Liane Thomas
