Cry of the Kalahari

A fascinating and moving true story of Africa
This book was hard to put down although in places I did not want to turn the page and see what happened next. A true story of Africa’s wildlife, both fascinating and informative, it was also heartbreaking in places and above all, it made me long to see the Kalahari myself.

I could hardly put it down
How and where do I start with this review? I guess, in keeping with the review title I will say that Cry of the Kalahari almost made me cry, from lack of sleep. I would settle in with the intention of reading for one hour and find myself still reading after 3. It's rare for me to find books these days that I don't want to put down.I think I expected just light, entertaining reading when I chose to download this book but that is not what I got. Yes, there are moments of humor for sure but there is so much more. The authors have done an absolutely amazing job of giving us a wealth of information on the animals of the Kalahari. You don't just get a scrap of information you learn about species and about the individual animals studied. I was drawn in so much that I felt like I was right there observing and interacting myself. The authors also manage to reveal enough of who they are as individuals to make you wish you could be a part of their team but do it in away that the book doesn't feel like ego was involved in the writing. If you love animals, especially wildlife, if you love nature, if you care about conservation, this is a book for you. Even if you just have a mild interest in some of the amazing creatures in the wild, sit down with this book for awhile and don't be surprised if your mild interest becomes more like a passion.I'm hoping to be able to afford to read the other books by this dynamic duo soon. I want to continue learning and doing so while feeling like I have been given temporary access to a world most of us will never see.

Beautiful
Such an important story, so unappreciated with the values of contemporary society. Perhaps post-Covid tourism dollars will improve the situation.

The Cry of the Kalahari
What an appropriate title. I believe that this is the first book written by the Owens, mark and Delia. “The Eye of the Elephant” is the sequel. My mistake was not knowing that there was an order for the two books. This book introduces the reader to the Kalahari, the animals, the politics, but most important, Mark & Delia. Knowing them, after reading this book brings the dedication of their research and their lives together. I reflected back what I was doing in the mid to late 70’s/early 80’s, and while these two were working so hard and sacrificing so much, I was contributing nothing to the world. Yes, other than there data accumulation, they walked away with so much more.I am amazed at the knowledge this book reveals about animals, many of us just take for granted.Well done in so many ways. I wish there was a sequel to “The Eye of the Elephant”.

Beautiful and heart rending
Delia and Mark are heroic figures. Their story of life in the African wilderness is deeply personal to every reader and a call to honor our natural resources. They write beautifully and you are on the adventure with them and feeling every natural wonder and loss. An amazing story- experience.

The 1970's in Africa!
I loved Delia Owen's best selling book, so of course I found the other three written with her husband. If you are looking to learn about life, grad research, the mammals of Africa before it became such a tourist destination this will take you back some fifty years. Kindle readers might note that the set of the three books are now available as one purchase. Good nonfiction reading.

The story helped me feel I was there.
As a kid while my friends wanted to be rock stars, I dreamt of being a National Geographic photographer. I'm over 70 now and have had an amazing life but no National Geographic. After reading Cry of the Kalahari, I've gotten part of that dream.

Engrossing and Heartwarming
What a story! It brings you very close to truly wild animals that had never seen humans. One thing - it is very detailed as to the difficulties faced by the authors.

A gripping adventure
This tale of two young people setting off to research the wildlife of Africa has it all. Excitement, suspense, humour and sobering insights into the plight of wild animals. A great story about the beauty and harshness of our natural 🌎 world.
