The Art of Recovery Perfect Paperback – March 9, 2010

I facilitate a Creative Expressions group at a methadone clinic, so I bought this book hoping for some new ideas. It definitely has some creative prompts, but I did find them to be a little repetitive. Also, the entire book is based on the 12 steps, which is fine, but it limits me since my treatment program is not a 12 step program. Overall, it has been a good resource, any if you run art therapy or similar groups I would recommend this book.

I am an art therapist and adult counselor at a facility that serves individuals who struggle with chemical dependency. I find this book to be an incredible resource for myself and the patients in my art therapy groups. The book offers both art directives and writing prompts that are paired with each of the 12 Steps. I believe that each of the art directives are tailored appropriately with each step, which helps to increase understanding of the goals/objectives of the step. I have received positive feedback from patients regarding the art directives and find the layout of the book to be simple and useful.

This book is a resource that pairs art therapy with recovery from addiction or substance abuse in a creative and helpful way. There are varied art therapy exercises paired with each of the twelve AA steps.

I wasn't impressed with the "worksheet" type of activities in the book. Was looking for creative and meaningful activities for an IOP program.

I got this book following the suggestion by my sponsor to "get me out of my head". I was very reluctant because I have no artistic talent whatsoever. I'm now on Step 9 and really appreciate this different approach to the 12 Steps, and have since recommended it to a sponsee, who now also uses it.
