Very Sturdy Shovel, well made but you better have some strength!
I bought this to replace a 24" I had for years. This one is made of steel and very well made at that. My previous one was aluminum. This has some serious strength to it and likely will not flex as the aluminum ones sometimes can. You should note that this is a "pusher" of snow not a "lifter" for snow, it's heavy and you should choose a different one for throwing the snow. It clears the driveway really well, but I use different style for the times when I need to lift and throw the snow. I would buy again without reservation. Just put some car wax on it before you use it to allow the snow to just fall of easy.

Great shovel
Bought for my son who lives in Mammoth Lakes California. His neighbor recommended this shovel said it was the best out there. So far it's getting the job done. Record snowfall in Mammoth Lakes.

Design could be improved
This shovel is very sturdy. Along with sturdy often comes heavy (too heavy for wife). The main issue (problem) with this shovel is the blade does not have enough bend and too sharp (lower) corners. The 'attack' angle of the lower blade edge is too steep unless the user bends over considerably and the sharp edge grabs any surface less than smooth. The other result of not having enough bend is that snow falls off very easily. Solved the problem though this week as ordered a snow blower.

Potentially a great light-duty shovel...if...
I bought one of these in 2009 and it held up through many snowfalls until last week when used on accumulated ice, it split at the top of the shovel portion neck along a lie with the screw. The pole itself is hollow metal, so it will not crack, bend or break. I have ordered a new one and realize now how to make this shovel sturdy and a truly great shovel for lighter loads (up to 2 or 3"). Here is the method: First put a mark, a straight line on the pole right in line with where the screw is inserted into the shovel (black lower part). In other words, mark the screw's location exactly on the pole. Then carefully remove the screw and remove the pole from the shovel. Fill the hole with Gorilla Glue or some other strong glue and reinsert the pole, making certain that the holes in the shovel and pole line up. Re-install the screw but do not over-tighten. Next go to a hardware or auto parts store and buy a small hose clamp, about 1.5 to 2 inch. Clamp the neck of the shovel at the top (above or over the screw) good and tight. Finally, remove the handle screw after marking the pole (as before with the shovel part), and remove the pole from the handle. Put some glue into the handle hole, re-insert the pole and the screw. Allow a good 24 hours for the glue applications to cure before using the shovel. This is a well designed product. It is light, especially good for a pivoting, sweeping push-shovel motion when shoveling. It is 49" tall (total height from ground to top edge of handle) and 18" wide--an excellent size for quick low stress work. If the Bully Company would make a shovel with these dimensions, I'd buy it. But this Ames product, with the modifications described is just as durable and will last until the edge wears out (which, after ten+ years of service, is normal). I live in the Chicago area and we get our share of old man winter's worst.

All three screws were loose and stripped! Also, item shipped bare, no protection at all. Label just slapped on the shovel, as is
(Edit/Update Below Original Text) original;Shovel came in with no packaging, no bubbles, no paper, no wrapping. Just slapped a shipping label on the the bare shovel and sent it along, as is.Shovel came with all three screws stripped and loose. Unit has two screws in a custom type of mount to the blade, both of those were stripped. Unit has one screw for the handle to shaft mount, it was also loose and stripped.I disassembled it completely. I cut off the end with the stripped holes and re-drilled and inserted better screws, properly and tightly. Also re-mounted the handle end too. This shovel is now assembled tightly. I'll re-do this again with bolts and nuts all the way through the shaft and the ends if need be. But this actually should hold up now as I didnt strip the mounting holes with a high speed/over torqued use of a power drill. I have seen so many people use a drill with apparent misunderstanding as to what "variable speed trigger" actually means, and how you properly use one.I hope this lasts now. It's a few inches shorter after repairs, but since I use this from a wheelchair the loss of a few inches isn't a problem, but loose and stripped mounting screws definitely was!Have not had any snow since this arrived. But the blade appears as well as my last shovel. No metal strip/edge so should not scrape the deck/ramp. As long as the screw mounts I repaired hold up this should last a few years as most do.I think the stripped mounting holes on this shovel is directly related to the lack in quality control that seems to get worse and worse lately. This never should have left the assembly process like this! ((( Update; ))) Well it did snow enough to use this once. I think this type of handle will be perfect for me if it holds up. But it won't be until next year's' winter before we will find out. I think this winter is behind us for the most part. That being said, I used it enough to say it is an excellent design for using as a push shovel. If I were lifting the snow I'd prefer a standard "D" handle as before because this one's probably too big for that type of shoveling. But for pushing the snow, I think it's a good design upgrade. The blade seems to be plenty strong too. And its wider than the last one I had which is preferable to me. So I'm happy with the overall shovel. Blade itself has a structure designed into it to help it last. Just unhappy that all three screws were stripped and loose, completely allowing the wobble from both handle and shovel mountings. I shouldn't have to work that much on a new shovel. I should have sent it back on principle alone. But I don't drive and my old shovel's been cracked right up the middle and failing since last winter. It finally failed that past snowstorm, so I really needed a new shovel. And at least having to rework the shovels' assembly, at least I know its done correctly this time. And I suppose I shouldn't be upset with their lack of protection on shipping packaging, and should just be glad I could find a company to ship this to me at all.

Not as sturdy as I had hoped
Not as sturdy as I had hoped, try not to jam it into ice or anything because it can bend. It's fairly easy to bend it back though.
