Disturbing Beauty

The most disturbing thing about this collection of minimally erotic art is its misleading title. I found the work more than one notch down from my standards of beauty, and not disturbing in the least. I had hoped for a daring exploration of sexual fetish, but found instead what appeared to be a parody of Fifties pinup art. While it largely mimicked that genre's general blandness, it lacked the elegance of its finer practitioners such as Elvgren. For the most part, I found this collection to be a bit underwhelming. The environmental surroundings of the principal figures were simplistic and lacking in detail and interest to the point that the artist appeared to lack ambition. An artist of the caliber of Boris Vallejo will utilize the entirety of his canvas to bring to life an implied story. I found that even Mironiuk's most central subjects were rendered with little nuance. If you're looking for beauty in pinups that reference fetish, it can be found more easily even in the mainstream, uncontroversial art of Olivia. At least her renditions of Bettie Page and her whips are lovely and juicy. If you are seeking images with a strong sexual component that are potentially disturbing, than your money would be better spent on an edgier, more meticulous and more cerebral artist like H.R. Giger.
