Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht: KOS-MOS PVC Figure (1:8 Scale)

Beautiful Killing Android
Man, I'm still sad about what happened to this series. Sure, the plotline was crazy and convoluted beyond reason, but it was all going to make sense in the end. Six games would be more than enough time to--wait, you're not doing six games? All the questions you raised in Episodes I and II are going to be answered in Episode III? You're cutting the series short? But that's not enough time to...NOOOOOO!This is KOS-MOS, the cover girl for the PS2 video game series, Xenosaga (subtitled: the series with the silly Latin names that I can't say). This is her form from the first game in the series, and my personal favorite. She is an android built with the soul purpose of combating the Gnosis, a hostile alien race that turns you to stone with a single touch, can become invulnerable to weapons as they phase shift, and are basically stomping humanity into dust. KOS-MOS is humanity's ace in the hole, and boy does she deliver. She uses all sorts of weapons, from a pistol, to twin heavy machine guns, to a scythe or a full cannon. Her hand-to-hand skills are incredible too. She also has an ability, linked to the headgear she has in the picture, that allows her to force the Gnosis into a tangible form so they could be destroyed. Throw in a killer look and a frosty attitude, and it's no wonder chaos is drawn to her--even if he says it's because they were linked in a past life. Sure, buddy. At first, KOS-MOS' stance seems a little odd. Why, when most of her detail is on the front (I mean her armor, not her 'padding'!), is the statue built to have her looking back over her shoulder? She even has her gun in her right hand, but you can't see it if you position her to look at you. So why in the world is she facing this way? Simple: this is her victory stance. As I said, this is KOS-MOS' model from the first game, and whenever you won a battle in that game, she would turn around and look over her shoulder and say something (if you got stomped in the battle and barely came out alive, she'd say, "I recommend reforming the group"). This took me a moment to realize, but I appreciate it now that I understand. Now, just because she's looking backward does not mean they skipped on the detail. Her outfit is perfect. She has the 'ab armor' on her front side, along with all the other details. This includes the chain necklace she wears that attaches from her armor to her collar. The headpiece she's wearing even has her name, KOS MOS, on it. All the little bells and whistles are here, from those weird golden thigh spikes she wears to the waist wrap she wears over her one-piece armor. She even has her thigh-high boots and that garter around her left leg--complete with the lace (I never understood that, but it looks good!).Her hair is a beautiful swirl of blue and gives the illusion of being made up of different strands and blowing in the wind--or floating is space if you want. The look in her red eyes is exact as well: Cold, but with a hint of something more. KOS-MOS always had that look on her face in the games, like there was something human beneath her cold android body. Those who've played the games know what that something is. Too bad it made little sense since they cut the length of the story. The gun, which you can barely see peeking out behind her left leg, is even detailed perfectly. There is nothing wrong with this statue that I could find. Two things worth mentioning. First, my KOS-MOS did not come with a clear plastic base as shown in the picture. It came with a white base. I have no problem with this, as KOS-MOS sits happily on it. Another thing is that her hair is lighter in person than it is in this picture. It's sky blue, not the dark blue shown here. Again, this is no big deal to me, but I feel I should mention it for those who might take issue with it. I think it's a lighting thing from when the picture was taken.Educational--Um...if you're going to build an alien-killing super weapon, make sure it's easy on the eyes so it she can keep troop moral up? Yeah, let's go with that.Durability--She's solid. You won't be fighting Gnosis with her and none of her parts are interchangeable, but she's not really a toy. She's for display purposes, and she's a mighty fine display. There are other KOS-MOS statues out there. Some cost more, some cost less. Some even let you change which weapons she's holding. However, they're all based off of her appearances from Episodes II and III, when they tried to make her (and everyone else in the games) look more human and less anime style. Some of those statues are rather impressive, but I don't like KOS-MOS' look in them. To me, this is how KOS-MOS should look. So to me, this is the best statue of her out there. Period.

Alter Knows Quality
When looking for new anime/game/comic figures to add to one's collection, you are bombarded with an incredible amount of items to choose from. When attempting to find figures of the android, KOS-MOS, from Namco's Xenosaga JRPG trilogy, you find that it is no exception. However it does bring about a particular issue to light:How do I find a figure that is of good quality, and won't cost me a small fortune? Alter is one of the few manufactures out there who has come up with a pretty solid solution. What is it? Simple:Let's make a high quality figure and not charge the wealth of a small country for it (like they do with their Xenosaga: Kos-mos EPIII Ver. 4 [1/8 Scale PVC ] ). And that is precisely what they did with this 1/8 scale PVC figurine of KOS-MOS V1. This figure is simply put, everything a KOS-MOS figure should aspire to be. It is immaculately detailed from the multiple strands of her waving hair, to the notches on her zipper, and buttons and ridges on her gloves and armor. Even her pistol is finely detailed. The expression on her face is her sort of "emotionless smile" (she is an android after all) that her visage dons when you are victorious in a battle in the first game. The pose is very cool as well, though some people may find it difficult to decide how they want to display it due to the somewhat awkwardness of the pose, because it comes straight out of the game itself when you defeat an enemy. KOS-MOS' body faces away from the camera before she twists her upper torso and head around, whipping her hair back to look over her shoulder and straight at the camera in a victory pose. The painting on the figure is very accurate and well done; overall the figure itself is very well-crafted and sturdy, though I wouldn't go running around with it. Another thing that I personally love about some of these higher quality KOS-MOS figures is the translucent hair, which adds a really cool "cosmic" feel to the overall design. The figure isn't the most affordable of the KOS-MOS selection out there, but it is by no means even half as pricy as some of the others (refer to the aforementioned V4 figure by Alter) and is still one of the best in terms of quality per dollar spent. An average crisp $70 for this robotic beauty of a heroine is a solid price and if you're lucky and patient you can get it for less. This KOS-MOS stands about 7 1/2" tall and to that end it is my only negative mark for the figure. She is not standing up completely straight and so I understand that if she were, the figure would be a good half inch to an inch taller, but I do wish it had some more height to it. If the price point is still a little too high for your tastes, I recommend the BOME collection model as a very fine substitute. Of the KOS-MOS figures and action figures out there, this and the BOME collection one are the two that I currently own, and am extremely pleased with both. Ideally I'd love to add the linked KOS-MOS V4 Alter model, as well as the Figma action figure and the Volks Cold-cast 1/4 scale statue, but I'm not a millionaire quite yet.
