The Old Outboard Book

My husband restores antique boat motors as a hobby. I got him this book as a gift. He said it was very helpful and he enjoyed reading it.

It is a very interesting history of an obscure subject. Even though the engine values are around 20 years old they are relatively pertinent. The Evinrude history is especially fascinating. I highly recommend this book for those that are interested in the many facets of the outboard boat motor manufacturing business that are discussed in detail.

If you want a book to tell you about the history of old outboard motors this book is for you. If you want a book that tells you how to work on old outboard motors this book is not for you. It gives a good guide as to who made what and when. It is not a service manual.

Would recommend to Martin fans.

This is the definitive book on old outboard motors. Much has been written on individual motors, or brands, but none other, isall encompassing. Thumbnail outlines and brief history of all major and minor brands of antique outboard motors. Price guide is outdatedbut still the only general source, available.

My husband bought this book and has just about worn it out reading and highlighting parts of it. He uses it all the time in fixing up his old boat motors.

A wealth of information here. Information on EVERY brand of old outboard from around the world. There's even a good bit of reference material in the back, including a price guide, but his prices are extremely low compared to outboard prices in my neck of the woods (New Orleans). Even so, still an interesting and informative book.

If you love old outboard motors,then this a MUST read book.I never knew there were so manyMakes of motors back in those days.this read shares the history of all the different makes and modelsFrom back then and even give you a pricing guideline and even some engine specs.Well worth the purchase.

Skips around to much,so many engine variations easy to loose interest.Where to obtain spares and a manual would have been a bonus.

This book is extremely hard to find it’s very rare and if you do find it usually $100 plus it’s up by highly collectable item a must-have for any out pardon through Z is I bought it for my brother when he was in the hospital with a heart attack and he loved it thank you

Dieses in dritter Auflage vorliegende Buch ist ein umfassendes (Sammler-) Verzeichnis mit mehreren hundert Motoren, von den frühesten Anfängen 1897 bis zum Jahr 1970. Die ersten 70 Seiten widmen sich der Entwicklung des Außenborders und den diversen Firmengeschichten, allen voran natürlich Evinrude, Johnsson und Mercury. Dann folgt auf den nächsten 140 Seiten die "Big List" und "The Back Rack", zwei Verzeichnisse aller (noch so exotischer) US-amerikanischer Motoren. An den Buchrändern jeweils ergänzt von Fotos, Zeichnungen und zeitgenössischen Werbeanzeigen. Ergänzt wird das Buch durch umfangreiche Anhänge (Price Guide, Model/Year Guide, etc.). Also erst einmal ein empfehlenswertes Buch, das nicht nur für Sammler interessante Detailinformationen enthält.Drei Dinge sind mir dennoch negativ aufgefallen. Zum einen: die "haptische" Aufmachung! Taschenbuchfeeling mit Kartoncover, durchweg schwarz-weiss gedruckt (was bei vielen Fotos schade ist) und ein grobes Papier, das das Attribut "Recycling-Qualität" wirklich verdient hat.Zum zweiten: die Aufteilung des Buches. Bei einem "Außenborder-Gesamtverzeichnis" erwarte ich eine alphabetische oder chronologische Reihenfolge. Das sieht Peter Hunn anders: in den ersten beiden Listen ("Big List" und "Back Rack") werden erst einmal die US-amerikanischen Motoren aufgeführt. Warum hierfür zwei getrennte Verzeichnisse nötig sind, ist mir nicht verständlich. In einem weiteren Kapitel finden sich englische und australische Motoren - wieder aufgeteilt in zwei separate Listen. Klassiker wie z.B. die deutschen "König"-Rennmotoren fehlen vollständig. Ich empfinde diese Aufteilung in vier(!) verschiedene Verzeichnisse in erster Linie als sehr unübersichtlich. Außerdem hätte ich mir eine durchgehend einheitliche Auflistung der "Eckdaten" aller Motoren gewünscht (z.B. "Hubraum / Leistung / Baujahr" etc.). Diese Daten werden aber - wenn überhaupt- nur im Text erwähnt. Bei vielen Motoren fehlen sie völlig.Zum dritten: der Sprachstil. Typisch Peter Hunn, typische Mischung aus Anekdoten und blumiger Sprache - typisch anstrengend zu lesen.Fazit: wer mit der Sprache klar kommt, findet hier viele "Insider-Infos" über die meisten alten Outboarder bis 1970. Dem Anspruch, ein "Gesamtverzeichnis" zu sein, wird das Werk jedoch nicht gerecht. Demjenigen, der vorrangig ein Buch über Rennmotoren sucht, sei alternativ ein Blick auf Peter Hunn's Buch "The Golden Age of the Racing Outboard" empfohlen.
