There's a secret to making it work...
The media could not be loaded. These traps have worked really well for us - at first they didn't work at all, but then we started putting a very small dot of peanut butter all the way on the back wall of the trap. You can't use much or it throws off the balance which makes the trap useless. But if you use a small amount, the smell entices the mice to go all the way to the back of the trap which causes it to tip backwards and makes the door slam shut and lock. Here are some things you should keep in mind when using these:- make sure the yellow tab is working correctly to lock the door, but be careful not to break off the yellow tab when you adjust it- after you catch a mouse be careful when you pick up the trap. Hold the door shut when you move it or the mouse might be able to get out.- if you transport the mouse to it's new home by car, put the trap in a covered shoebox - you don't want a mouse loose in your car!- these traps are reusable, but you should clean them out with soap or bleach and super hot water between each use- wash your hands really well after messing with the traps- be sure to check the traps at least every 24 hours - you don't want the little guys to die a slow, painful death in a humane trap!- be sure to release the mice far enough away from your house that they can't get back to it- find out where they are getting in and seal it or you'll be chasing mice forever! (we finally discovered that the seal on the dog door had come loose giving the mice in the vacant lot next door free access to our house - easy to fix - yay!)My only complaint about the traps is minor: it would really help if they were clear plastic. There are other traps on the market that are clear and it would be so much easier to know whether there is actually a mouse inside when the trap is sprung. Some mice are so light that you can't really tell if there's anything inside the trap and you don't want to open it to see (I did this once) because the mouse will spring out of the trap and, in my case, run back under the fridge! And be warned: These traps won't last forever, after catching a half dozen or so mice I had to replace one of them - but, big deal, they're under five bucks for two!Using a humane trap is so much better on so many levels, but mostly it's so much more pleasant to check the traps in the morning and not have to deal with a squished dead mouse. And it's fun when you turn them loose and they go hopping off into the forest!Happy hunting!ClairePS - It always makes my day to know that people find these reviews helpful. Also, if you'd like to ask a question or leave a comment I usually respond the same day, so if you have a question or comment (even if it's just to say, Hi!") feel free to post it below.**********UPDATE January 28, 2014************I just ordered two more of these from Amazon. I was disappointed to find the new ones unusable. The door was slightly deformed on both of them so that the doors fit too widely on the base causing them to slip out of the hinge-pegs upon closing. Useless. The door can't lock if it jumps the hinge. A mouse could simply push the door back open and casually stroll away... after eating it's fill of peanut butter. I'll be returning these to Amazon and purchasing my next pack of these traps at a local store so I can check to make sure they work before I leave the store.

Bad
Doesn't work. Mouse escapes. Super cheap.

Not built like it used to be
I had these Victor mouse traps for years. Great for the small mice we get in suburbia. Sadly, the mice finally chewed through the air holes so I ordered more. The plastic is thinner. The "lock" when the hatch closes is thinner and would be easier to allow the mouse to push the hatch back up. And most surprising, the little nub that allows the hatch to swing was much smaller so that the hatch door could easily pop off! Two came in the package. One won't work because the little nub is too small. The other one I set up, will know in a few nights how it worked. Bummer about this because the other mouse trap brand I have is too heavy and large for the small mice we get.

I caught over 150 mice in two months with just one of these traps.
Once I worked all all the little idiosyncrasies of this trap, I discovered it actually works well. With experience, I have about a 95% catch rate using this economical trap.Things to watch out for:Put the bait (peanut butter is best) against the back wall of the trap, or the mouse can get out.If you use more than a pea-sized gob of peanut butter, you run the risk of the trap door not closing (this trap is very sensitive to weight distribution).Make sure the floor is level, or the mouse can get the peanut butter and exit without the trap door coming down. When I choose a spot, I actually test the trap to make sure the door is closing. If you must put the trap on an un-level floor, put the door facing the low side of the floor.DO NOT leave the trap overnight, or there is a 25% chance the mouse will chew its way out. However, since mice are nocturnal, and these traps are so cheap, you may want to just leave them over night, knowing that some traps will have to be replaced. When you are relocating the mouse, be careful not to press on the yellow bar, or a strong mouse will be able to open the door.Place the traps parallel to the wall. You know you've found a good spot when you start catching mice, so always put the trap in the same spot.UPDATE 3/30/20: All of a sudden the trap stopped working. Mice were going in, eating the bait, and leaving. I thought they must be babies, and they were not heavy enough to make the back of the trap go down. SO...I did two things:(1) I smeared my peanut butter bait all over the back of the trap, so the mice had to spend some time eating back there.(2) I placed a wine cork on top of the trap (slightly to the rear) to change the center of gravity, thus making the trap more sensitive. The very first night I started catching mice again (tiny little baby ones).

3) It's good that the plastic is hard
I've used these traps before, and they do work. The biggest problems I've seen are:1) My suspicion: the traps are short enough that the tail on a larger mouse can hang out, preventing the door from latching closed.2) I also suspect that some mice are able to defeat the latching mechanism through sheer strength & persistence; a bit too much play in the fit between the door, the body of the trap and the latch?3) It's good that the plastic is hard, but eventually mice will gnaw between the vent holes in the door to create a large enough hole to escape.4) Because of the closed end, they're a bit difficult to clean & re-bait.

Simple To Use and Humane
We have a cat who likes to bring mice into the house to play with, without killing them. These traps are ideal for catching the mice so that we can give them back their freedom. We put a few digestive biscuits crumbs in as bait.

No caza ratones
La cajita es muy pequeña y tiene que estar en un sitio donde puede bascular algo (así se activa el mecanismo. Pero aún que tengo ratoncitos entrando, esta trampa ni la ven. En mi caso no ha funcionado.

I agree...they are worse than useless!
I had good intentions of catching a mouse or mice that had eaten a Christmas present intended for grand-daughter and depositing it/them a long way from home but still alive! Daft! These so-called 'traps' are absolutely useless. On one occasion the bait disappeared but the trap wasn't closed, and an another the trap was shut but the bait had gone! Only one of the two worked properly and they were just a waste of postage! I gave up and set a conventional trap and immediately caught the culprit. Very dead, but at least I'd got him!Other humane traps may well work, but these particular ones, which trigger the door by the trap tipping under the weight of the mouse when it enters are a waste of time. In one that came the plastic was moulded so badly that the door didn't work properly.
