Very good for the start-up improviser
Cunliffe is a real jazzer -- very clear in his explanations but a cool, jazzy sound even in these beginning exercises. Explains some things I've always been a little fuzzy about (why typically no tonic in the left-hand voicings? why is the 3rd/7th the basic voicing? what are the different "types" of comping?). The book is a series of progressive exercises , each built on the previous one -- very helpful! Hard to find good, clear books on jazz improv. I strongly recommend this one!

Jazz Keyboard Toolbox
This book provides a very understandable set of basic, but useful, concepts that apply to playing Jazz on the keyboard. As a percussionist, I think the information is also appropriate for mallet students. The CD is very helpfull, and supplies you with plenty of time (with the recorded material) to work with the tunes/techniques in the book. Bill Cunliffe did a commendable job with this book. He put as much into this 48-page book as one could/should expect.

bill's done it again!
I realy like the way Bill presents the material. It's not so hard as discourage the student but still has enough substance to encourage. For me, this a excellent book. Previously I purchased Bill's "Jazz Invention", another excellent book. I've heard thatBill has a new book coming out soon which I'm sure will most likely be excellent. Thanks a lot Bill and hurry up with news book.

OUTSTANDING!
With regards teaching Jazz Piano this book has finally got it right. It hits that sweet spot between not being too hard but not sounding too simple either. If you sight read a bit that will help but even if you don't and you have to work out the notes first I still think you will love this. It doesn't go into too much theory but just gets you playing and after the melody is played you get a few rounds with the backing track only to jam with. There are also a few transcribed solos at the end. If you can already play through complex chord changes then this will be too basic but if you are at that point where you know some Jazz concepts but aren't quite sure what to DO with all the information then this is the book for you.
