Genie GER-2 Garage Door Opener Universal Emergency Release Kit

I purchased this two years ago and installed it with no problem. I've tested it a couple times since install but today we had a power outage and I had to get into the garage. I put my key in and it wouldn't turn. I tried the other key and no luck. Both keys fit but neither would turn. I kept the keys tied together & taped inside a drawer in my house so I always knew where where they were in case of an emergency like today. They key ended up snapping off in the lock so I had to drill a new hole in my garage door underneath this terrible product and use a hook to grab the wire above and unlock my garage door. The one time it was an emergency situation this product failed miserably. I should note that this 'Genie' product did not come in a package that had Genie on it and the keys were not the ones pictured, I don't understand how sellers can falsely advertise the product you want only to switch it with a cheap POS from China. I just went to the Chamberlain website and ordered a genuine product from them.

This Emergency Release Lock Kit is the "standard" configuration for every type of lock like this. It will fit in the hole that is pre-stamped in steel doors and the bolt holes will line up correctly. As others have noted, this is NOT a Genie part, but it works. If you are really worried about high security on this lock, maybe you shouldn't install it at all because popping open a garage door is pretty darn easy with or without one of these release locks. This device just makes it so you don't do damage to the door to release the garage door opener in case of power outage or malfunction.Also note that this is a unit with the shorter cable, about 24 inches. Remember, shorter doesn't mean worse, it just means shorter. If the cable is too long for your needs you will have to shorten it or you risk a problem with it hanging down when the door is up and a larger possibility of it getting tangled up when you need to use it. It's really easier to extend a cable that is too short rather than shorten one that is too long...just add a piece of nylon cord. If you already have one installed and need a new one, measure the current cable. If you are installing it for the first time, take a piece of string from the intended installation position to find out what length cable you need.I agree with other reviewers, the seller should be required to disclose the actual brand.

The bag of parts that arrived said Genie on a sticker that kept the bag closed, but the instructions and lock say VEE, and were in pretty rough shape. Honestly, it looked like someone ate a meal over the paper, wiped their face when they were done, crumbled it up and threw it in the bag. I installed it anyways, because it looks like it works, and it does, but I'm not happy about the false advertising. I though I was getting a deal, but I was just getting ripped off. Amazon needs to make sure these people selling on here are accountable for labeling and selling the correct product.

I am a locksmith. I have been using this product for sometime now. It performs a basic function of being an emergency release for your garage door. The product in the picture appears to have a two-sided key. In reality it's a one-sided silver key. It claims to be a genie product which I think it is. The picture is just not what you get. I have searched and searched for a version of this dialogue with the tubular key. Since I am unable to find one with the tubular key I have settled on using this for my customers. It works pretty good.

The item I received is different from the one pictured. I have installed these in the past, looked at other similar postings here and wanted the item shown. The gold colored key has cuts on both edges which should make it more tamper-proof. The kit I received has a square silver key. The cable is on this item shorter than the ones I have bought in the past. Sellers should be required to post an accurate picture of the product placed for sale !! This couldn't be an improved version. I'm sure it'll work but buyers should get what is paid for.

This locking emergency release works and looks okay cosmetically, but 3 things about it fell short of my expectations:1) The package is branded MMTC, not Genie as described.2) The key is off-brand, not the more secure, two-cam Chicago brand lock/key pictured.3) The cable supplied is very short, about 24". To reach the overhead release lever from the shoulder-height hole already drilled in my door I had to attach an extra 12" of cable.

I only have one opening to my garage and that is with the electronic garage door. Installers told me that there would be no way to access the garage if there was a power outage. As I discovered, this is the tool for that problem. Good instructions for installation and it works perfectly.

I bought this because I normally entered and exited the house through the garage door and the regular doors all had dead bolts. When the electricity went out, there was no way to get into the house, other than forcing a window, and that took time, tools and did damage. Even though I had a Craftsman garage door opener, this worked fine with it. In fact, it would work fine with any garage door opener that has a pull release handle on a rope on the inside. You have to drill a half inch hole through the door to install it, but it is easy to install. Then with the key you can release the door during a power outage from the outside to get into the house. They used to sell them at Lowe's and Home Depot, but I checked both of those and Sears and finally gave up and ordered this one. It was a lot cheaper and easier than replacing my garage door opener with a battery backup model.
