Outstanding clinical resource
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and this book is an outstanding clinical resource. It clearly walks you through treating clients with suicidal ideation’s, and /or self harming behaviors. It breaks down different theoretical practices when dealing with suicide and self harm such as CBT, biosocial theory, etc. It gives you access to assessment tools like the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, and work sheets that are designed to help the clinician gather important information. This book also has worksheets that can be given to clients to help them in the treatment of suicidal ideations and self harm. This is an outstanding book and I believe Dr. Houston did a great job making it comprehensive.

Amazingly resourceful and useful workbook!
As a Psychologist and Professor, I found this book to be extremely helpful in creating a treatment plan when working with my clients who self harm. The suicide risk assessment portion is amazingly useful, especially if you don’t have an organized format to follow when assessing suicidal clients! Dr. Houston has also incorporated information about working with certain types of clients in special groups, which I really appreciate. She has taken the time to address how cultural factors play a role in understanding and when attempting to prevent suicide!! Such an important piece to include!! I will definitely be recommending this book to my colleagues and students!!

Another great option!
Fan of these books. I love DBT and that theoretical approach to treatment. These books are good optional reading for clients participating in DBT treatment.

Excellent and comprehensive tool for your tool box
This book is a must have for your clinical library. One of the most comprehensive books on how to treat a wide range of patients. I am implementing new suicide prevention protocols in a new mental health program. I read this to further expand my knowledge and it has been very was helpful.

I think this workbook may be useful if you are still a student or lack any crisis training. I purchased in hopes of strengthening my crisis management skills. Unfortunately, I found much of this information to be very basic and repetitive. I don't think I would recommend this to many of my colleagues as it feels like a waste of money.

Mostly risk assessment tools
I guess it depends on what you want this book for. But if you're hoping for something to use as a co-therapy tool or exercise sheets to support someone this isn't it. Their exercise sheets are risk assessment tools .... Not a therapeutic tool. If you already have a robust knowledge of self harm and are looking for something to use alongside a therapy session this definitely isn't it. I'm sorry to the authors though as I rarely leave reviews like this but if I could have sent this back I would have.
