Super expensive, not worth the price
Super expensive, not worth the price. If it triggered remote strobes via wireless like the 430 and 600 et units do, it could be justified. As it is, it puts out great light for macro, but the Polaroid cheapo unit would probably give you similar results. Works great, way overpriced. Stars are for build quality and function. Works great.

Delivers enough light to work very well.
Delivers enough light to work very well with the 100mm macro lens Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Fixed Lens for Canon SLR Cameras it was designed to work with. High speed synchronization works as expected. Quality build as would be expected from Canon. Batteries last a long time.

Good Quality Device, instructions need to be simpler.
This is a high quality Ring Flash. I bought it to go with my new 100mm Canon Macro L.The flash requires a 67mm to 58mm adapter to fit on the 100mm and will on other lenses as well. You will want to check the filter ring size for the lens you plan to attach this too. If it is not 58mm you are going to need an adapter to make it work.It is well built, solid device that you would expect from Canon compared to a knock off or aftermarket brand. The reason I have given this only 4 stars is that I think it is high time that Canon and other OEM's remove the dictionary style user guides that come with their equipment and give more user friendly guides on the basics and how to quickly set up the stuff and get going. The basic settings you need to get it going.I am certainly not a Novice, and consider myself to a be Pro-sumer of Camera equipment... I was able to figure it out fairly well... but not everyone can do that that will want to use this.

Great flash, but be careful with filter sizing
Works well for dental photography.Note that if you want to use a filter with this flash, the manual is a bit ambiguous and unclear about how to do this. I bought a 58 mm filter to put after the Macrolite adapter on the 100mm f/2.8L IS, but before the flash. The flash doesn't fit onto the lens properly this way (but thanks to Amazon's excellent policies I just returned the filter and bought a different size). The manual suggests that this should work, but isn't very clear. To use a filter correctly, either:a. Buy a 67mm filter for the front of the flash and screw it into the threads on the flash.b. buy a filter of whatever your lens filter size, put it directly on the lens, and then screw the macrolite adapter to the filter.

Where, oh where could my a a-dapt-ers be?
I'm disappointed that the adapter rings are not included in the flash kit. Some lenses apparently require threaded attachment adapters. There are about 3 common lens thread diameters out there. I have a Canon 100mm IS L series USM, which requires a 67mm adapter in order to attach the ring light to the front of my lens. Without the adapter the ring light is useless. And get this - Canon sells each adapter for about $30. That's right! The 67mm adapter I need is essentially a threaded filter with the glass removed. It's worth about $5. They are very inexpensive to manufacture. As for whether I like the flash, how would I know? It is inoperable. The blasted adapters should be in the box at the time of purchase. Jim
