Living French: 7th edition

Comprehensive course
These books provide a context-based course with a solid grammatical background. I like the fact that it includes everything in such a small book. It has a nice discursive style but also doubles up as a kind of reference grammar book. Eg I can look up the subjunctive and see how it works in context. My only regret is that it doesn't exist in languages other than German, Italian, Spanish and French. Perhaps, the actual texts could use a little updating. I remember using these same books as a child. I would highly recommend.

Magnifique
Excellent, thorough book which is easy to navigate and great for current students and those who have studied French before. I speak approximately A Level French and this has been a fantastic way to brush up.The only problem I have encountered with the course is that my English education has been so poor (thank you, comprehensive school, for getting me an A in GCSE English without knowing what an adverb is) that I occasionally need to go away and check what is meant by 'abstract noun', 'conditional tense', etc. before it's possible to continue gainfully. If your knowledge of grammar terminology is equally lacking you may also struggle since it is, as it says, a grammar-based course. The contents aside, a real flaw with the book is the quality of the binding and paper. The content is excellent but the paper is of very poor quality (think those cheap Penguin Classics of which you can buy 3 for £5). The binding itself does not stand up to much page-turning and you would expect that a book like this is created so that the user can return to chapters of particular interest. Far from being able to refer time and time again, I have only had the book for a few months and mine is already beginning to fall apart. It's a great shame that a book as useful as this is not made to the quality of a standard textbook.

Best one out there!
I've picked up many French books over the years, but struggled with expressions or vocabulary that haven't yet been covered. Other books sometimes 'treat' you to lots of unnecessary cultural references. But this book has been a blessing. It just gets down to the core grammar, and gradually adds the vocabulary you need to follow the dialogues. There are 24 lessons, and I've gotten to lesson 8, and could not be happier. The audio recordings are also very professional, and easily to follow.T.W. Knight really understood teaching. It's no wonder new editions just keep on coming!

So perfect to use for someone beginning in French
So perfect to use for someone beginning in French! It starts very basic then slowly advances. The learning material builds up on each other, therefore, you cannot forget what you just learned.
