Fantastical and fantastic!
I enjoyed this book very much. It is full of fantastical beings and events that interface with everyday modern people. That interface is the most compelling underlying motivation of the story, of course. I also like the fact that the main child character is female for a change. Yea!The book is also, in a sense, all about books, and I love books about books. If you have a fairly good knowledge of classic children's literature, you'll enjoy those connections immensely. If you like books, particularly children's books, and you like fantasy and adventure, you will probably enjoy this book.Quotations are used from many other children's and fantasy books. Those make the story even more enjoyable. The writing is creative and interesting, the plot is fantastical and convoluted, the characters are varied and mostly interesting, sometimes likable and sometimes detestable, of course. Some characters aren't clearly good guys or bad guys, which is similar to life as we know it.On the down side, which is minor, I am wondering just who this book was written for. I'm told it's children's literature. But children do not need to read about this much violence, surely, even when it is committed mostly by beings from books rather than reality? I don't know. I also find some plot twists to be very unbelievable, but it is a fantasy, after all.I read this book on the Kindle (as I read most books) and only noticed one potential typo in the book (which is amazingly good, really).

Not Harry Potter
If your YA reader is looking for a story like Harry Potter, this is not it. Although the premise (chacters coming out of books while book is being read outloud) is an outstanding idea, this book is extreamly over written. At over 500 pages the story keeps getting bogged down. This story is slow and after 380 pages, i just couldn't continue. I am sorry to say (after all the authors hard work) that I as an adult I DNF this book, and would nt recommend this story to my YA as she would be bored with the slow pace. I suggest tbat the author speed up the pace and stop repeating so much.

I bought this for my son sand ended up engrossed
This had made into a movie (Brendan Fraiser) and I'd watched it a couple of years ago, so unfortunately for me I had all of the actors' faces in mind throughout the book and left little to my imagination there, but at least they casted it very well!!(and closely to the book's description - for the most part. The PLOT deviates some, so even if you've seen the movie, you'd be missing out not reading Funke's wonderful writingYou get the plot from other reviews', so I will leave you with this. There are NOT too many books of this genre that are truly original. This is. There are not too many books out there that don't fall into some campy dialogue. This doesn't.I go through books, Kindle and otherwise, and after reading Inkheart, I went and purchased the trilogy hardcopy (of which I'm terribly discerning about what takes up space) because I think this is a classic. My son just read it as well, he's 8, but reading beyond his 2nd grade level, he finished and immediately asked when he's getting the next one!! And has asked me twice, "Is it here yet?"I think it's a testament to Funke's writing, that she can so capture myself and my son so completely.

If you love books - It's a must read!
Such a good book! At times it was quite intense with how evil some of these characters are. I loved this book because it's essentially about the Love of reading. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in this series!

Great Trilogy for my 11 year old son
Bought the trilogy for my 11 year old son at his own request! He doesn't open a book very often and prefers to play video games, so I am glad he found a book set that he enjoys reading. These are NOT little books, they are roughly about 500 pages long and he's on the 3rd one. Well worth the purchase. He even has me reading them and it is a good read for any adult who enjoys reading young adult books. (I'm on the first book)

Great idea, but author didn't pull it off
I read aloud to my kids, and this book started out so promising. It was a great idea. Some characters were interesting. But the author failed to follow through. By the end, we were so ready to be done. My gripes: waaaaay too long for itself. And I don't mind long books. Harry Potter books are awesome, even though long. I feel like this author could have cut out at least 1/3 of the story, and it would have been way better. Too much repetition, and it failed to hold our interest. Second, the main character Meggie was unlikeable. Although fiery is good, disrespectfulness is not. We couldn't relate to her. Third, the stakes weren't high enough, so you didn't deeply care about the outcome. Fourth, tension was not on every page. It wasn't compelling. Fifth, like another reviewer said, the villain was also uncompelling and lacked any kind of spark. And it was a shame because I could tell Cornelia Funke was a good writer, but not a good storyteller. All in all, the book made me decide to definitely not read the other books in the series.

PRICELESS STORY...QUALITY of paper poor...
As many reviewers noted...the story itself is extrordinary and they have all the details. I ordered the hardback as I wanted to keep it in my personal library as I enjoy reading books over again and sharing them with others. The Library Hardback is nice to have BUT the paper is SO cheap...it looks like thin recycled newspaper and won't have any longevity. If I had realized this I would have ordered a paperback. I will find an edition I want and donate this to my local library as they will sale it as a used book to help their funds. As a library book bond, I thought this would be of a higher quality...NOW I recognize the reason for the lower price. BUT A WONDERFUL, PRICELESS, MEANINGFUL STORY that is MUCH, MUCH better than the movie...it would be a disservice not to read the book if you only saw the movie.

Brilliant book!
My daughter and I read this together at bedtime. Although she's 10 so could read it herself we're enjoying it together and I think she gets more out of it that way. The characters are wonderfully drawn out, the author starts each chapter with a quote from other books (e.g. The Princess Bride, Watership Down, The Hobbit, etc). There's no specific location but, if you've travelled a bit, you can imagine it set in any Southern European country (I think!). I didn't think I'd like a fantasy novel but this isn't over the top.Anyway, not sure if this review has helped much but I'd recommend it for a 10-14 year olds. And definitely "reading with mummy time"!!

Gorgeous
What a gorgeous story and shame on me for not having read it before. I have to admit, I read Inkheart because a student of mine recommended it. He was reading at and I wanted to encourage him to carry on with the chunky book. What happened was that I got lost in the world of Inkheart. That was pleasantly unexpected.I have often wanted to live in the world of my my books. I want my Hogwarts letter and I frequently check wardrobes just in case I get to go to Narnia. After reading Inkheart and knowing that it may not go the way that I want it to and that in fact living in a book world may end completely awfulIy for me I am starting to rethink that decision…but still how exciting would it be?What I am most grateful for is that I have two other books in the series are already waiting for me to read. I would be stressed out if I had to wait for the sequels. If you are looking for a beautiful series of books to fall in to then I thoroughly recommend Inkheart. It is a must for anyone who loves book and to celebrate the whole world of literature. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke is available now.

Enthralling
We’re reading this book to our year 4 class at school and I decided to buy it and read ahead as I was so intrigued by the book from the first chapter. It’s an enthralling story, I always wanted to find out what happened next and found the writing style unflavoured and effective. It’s quite a dark story, pretty menacing in places, great if you like a tale with twists and turns and characters you can really get to know and like (or in some cases, dislike!). As a 45 year old who’s been a keen reader all her life, the premise of the story is fascinating. I’d recommend it to any young person or an adult who’d enjoy a diverting piece of storytelling.

4.5 stars.
I loved this film when I was younger so reading this book brought back so many nostalgic memories and feelings which made it so much fun. I had never read the book before so it was also interesting to see how much was adapted and changed for the film - although I also haven't watched the film for years so my memory was a bit dodgy. I am excited to read the rest of the trilogy as I have no idea what happens next and hopefully it won't disappoint.

Easy and intriguing reading
I once tried to read this book as a teenager and have returned to it as an adult. I really enjoyed this book: the premise is excellent and it is filled with wonderful characters. The book is easy to read with short chapters that keep up the pace well. Each chapter starts with a quote and often ends with a picture which is interesting and unusual. My only reservation is that the book drags a bit at points. There is lots of back and forth in the story line without a lot of plot development. Overall though I really enjoyed reading it. I'm intrigued to see where the sequel goes!
