No it is not instant. It is fine but a little coarse. It is real roasted chicory root. I mix a little of it with my coffee beans, grind the whole thing and brew it or make an espresso from it.

it will give you about as many cups as a pound of coffee would. I would even say slightly more with chicory, but it’s all a matter of taste and how strong you like to brew your drinks, but roughly the same as coffee.

I don't know what to believe. One review said it smelled funny and another said it had no odor at all. Should I buy this or not.

Yes it smells funny, but Chicory root always smells funny in my opinion. Like Don H, I add it to my coffee. I brew a bunch then blend 1/2 cup coffee with 1/2 cup chicory. Tastes wonderful.

Is the corse ground for use in a French press?

I am not sure about the French press. The directions state you would pour boiling water over 1-2 tsp, cover, steep for 3-4 minutes then strain. Hope this helps.
