From Sydney Pollack, the Academy Award-winning producer and director of Out of Africa, comes this passionate romantic thriller with a stellar cast. Dutch Van Den Broeck (Harrison Ford) plays an Internal Affairs sergeant who becomes entangled with , Kay Chandler (Kristin Scott Thomas) a high-powered Congresswoman when an airplane crash kills both their spouses. Dutch soon discovers that it was more than coincidence that had their spouses on the same plane— it was an affair. Details of the affair anger Kay, who is determined to protect both her daughter and her political career. As the story unfolds, she finds herself unable to resist being drawn into Dutch's investigation, and the passion they find in each other brings about the most unexpected discovery of all.

Duo Noir
Random Hearts was a difficult film for me to enjoy. It was so heart-wrenching to watch as two basically nice people are blind-sided by circumstance and painfully drawn to each other as if they had no other choice. It was not my notion of `fun.'Sydney Pollack's work seems to be well cast in both its primary and secondary roles. I'm a fan of most all these people. Harrison Ford is "Dutch" Van Den Broeck, a D.C. police sergeant with Internal Affairs. Kristin Scott Thomas is New Hampshire Congresswoman Kay Chandler. Charlie Dutton, Dennis Haysbert, Richard Jenkins, and Mr Pollack himself fill a few of the lesser and -- except for maybe Dutton as Alcee-mainly disinteresting roles. Outside of Alcee and Kay, it was difficult to care about anyone in this film.Despite the beautiful color, this is a film noir after the style of the 30s-50s. It does have more action and outdoor sequences which really require the color but, with some judicious re-writing, this could have been a brilliant piece in Black and White. The darkness of it all is emphasized by the arcane Jazz undertones in the musical score.Van Den Broeck's wife and Chandler's husband are killed in a plane crash. Apparently, they were on their way to Miami together and had probably done this before. There are more questions than answers as Dutch and Kay deal with the shock of their respective spouse's deaths. They contort emotionally with stunned, angry and hurt feelings within as they slowly unravel the affair. Both principals look for answers in their own way. Kay wants to drop it, forget it and move on, hopefully protecting her daughter and the dignity of her office along the way. Dutch would like to know more about the dead couple: how they met, their plans, their secretive interest in the Tango, etc. There are sub-plots that, for me, totally got in the way. The police story seems pointless but I suppose that it's necessary to balance with the equally banal re-election race. Both provide context and perhaps help to move the action along. Maybe they are also supposed to remind us that life continues, however roughed-up we might be.There are three lines that I find particularly significant. Two are made by Kay, the first when she goes to be with Dutch at his cabin on the inlet just off Chesapeake Bay: "I'm not going to make any small talk, `cause I don't want there to be junk between us."The second after Dutch is shot by a rogue cop (Haysbert) and lies in Hospital recovering: "We did OK Dutch. We did the best we could under the circumstances."The third line belongs to Dutch and is addressed to Kay earlier in the film: "What's the last thing that you remember about you and your husband that you know was true?"Lines don't have to be magisterial to be meaningful. These are minimal but quite good. There are some others as well. (I'm also partial to "Don't! Just Drive.")I know the movie ran a bit long but I think there should have been more footage in the forest. It was so lovely. After consultation with myself, Two Stars. It would have been Three if he'd gotten the girl.Russell de Ville14 April 2006

lots of big stars in this one
totally different than the way i remember the movie from 22 years ago. the first half is about the plane crash and how it affected the two people , in this story. they work out their problems together. it's like every actor isfamous. you have the star of law and order captain as a lawyer. the bartenders are both big stars, since the beginning of time. one was on evening shade. the have the president from 24, who does allstate commercials , as a bad cop. he is always a good guy.it would take all day to go through each person.

Makes you say hmmmm....
Enjoyed this movie. Different storyline than typical which keeps you watching and wondering what will happen next. I don't want to give away the storyline but if you like a bit of action in your romance movies, you will probably like this. The actors do an awesome job!

Statistics...
Statistically speaking, air travel is still the safest form of travel available to us. Don't let this film fool you otherwise. I mean, what are the odds that a loved one will die in a plane crash. Furthermore, what are the odds that this loved one will be sitting next to the person that they've been carrying on an affair with for a while now? Again, despite the physical and emotional devastation that this film's plot brings to the screen, don't let that fool you...the odds are extremely low. Anyway, this was a decent film that loses a star only because the subplot of Harrison Ford's police officer character confused me a bit. It looked like someone tried to splice an episode of Law and Order in there. But apart from that, a fine film. Ford and co-star Kristin Scott Thomas seemed very natural together, even when the antagonism was in the air. They showed us the struggle of two people who not only lost their spouses in a plane crash, but learned that these spouses had been cheating on both of them with each other. While we hear about this plot point a lot throughout the feature, it's never overdone, so you can sit there without wanting to remove your ears. It's a decent flick and I'll go read the book soon. Enjoy.

I miss Sydney Pollack!
This is a mature, sophisticated movie that deals with a subject (adultery) that, although unpleasant because it affects two unsuspecting, attractive in their own right spouses, it reflects real life. I kept being drawn back to the movie and have watched it several times. It probably has happened many times in real life in the same circumstances. Kristen Scott Thomas' character seemed willing to put her adulterous husband behind her because of 1)her daughter, 2) her very public position as a congresswoman and 3)maybe the relationship wasn't all that great to begin with. The Harrison Ford character found it much more difficult to move on with his life because he "didn't have a clue" that his wife was cheating on him and he was paid as a policeman to know when people were lying to him.In my mind, Scott Thomas gave a terrific performance, as usual. Two of her "speeches" were highlights in the movie: the phone call to Mr. Ford's recorder and her statement to the press as she left the hospital. The hospital statement summed up the movie in a brief, brilliant fashion. At the end, out of pain and disappointment came the possibility of happiness. How many hours of great entertainment and story telling was given to us by Sydney Pollack? Think of all the great movies that he produced and/or directed. He died too soon. I miss Sydney Pollack when I think of all the stories he had yet to tell.ps: The music in this movie is outstanding and played a big part in setting tone and mood.

Watch it Again - it got better.
Enjoyed it very much a second time. Many actors and actresses that were little known when film was made and have since made it big. A couple of examples: Edie Falco and actress that played Zoe in House of Cards. Film had other surprises too. Watch it again if you saw it once before.

A tale of attraction.
Harrison Ford and Kristine Scott Thomas are absolutely perfect in their portrayal of 2 people caught up in the aftermath of a plane crash in which their respective spouses are found to be travelling as man and wife, Dutch just can not get his head around the fact that his wife has betrayed him, and Kay Chandler does not appear to want to know any details of the couples behavior. This is tale of attraction between 2 people who should never have met, and interleaved in this story is the grim reality of Dutch's New York cops life and Kay Chandlers attempt to launch a political career, the 2 leads are played out to perfection in this tale of attraction in appalling circumstances.

One of my favourite Harrison Ford films
This 2006 film was unavailable from LoveFilm hence my decision to purchase as I remembered it as one of Harrison Ford's best. Good films like good books do not go easily out of date. The film opens with shots of an empty bedroom, (2 wine glasses and a bottle placed deliberately in the foreground) and a phone message from an unidentified man leaving a message for someone who presumably might have been occupying the bed! The storyline moves fairly fast and you need to be concentrating as both the police sergeant (Harrison Ford), and those viewing the film, start putting the pieces together to make a coherent jigsaw picture of love, marriage, betrayal and the lies that always go with betrayal.Good performances from both major and minor characters. The weakest part of the film is the sergeant's work with a rather muddled and contrived plot here and therefore if the rating allowed half-stars it would have got four and a half rather than five! Otherwise, excellent: settle down with your own bottle of wine and enjoy.

Unexpectedly good
On paper this is a regular, improbable, coincidence-riddled stock Hollywood film isn't it? Boy-meets-girl, both die in plane crash, very surprised ex-partners discover each other, etc. We get the obligatory US government angle plus a corrupt cop investigation, chase and shooting thrown in too. Now watch the film and read Ebert's review. Janet Maslin, another critic, wrote 'laconic Ford is wrenchingly effective throughout'. That works for me. How accurately the word 'wrenching' describes it all.Harrison Ford is disturbingly, self-revealingly good. Kristin Scott-Thomas is always good. Their cold, understated earlier conversations are first class I think and the opening situation (and scenes) will haunt you for the rest of the film, maybe longer.

Random Hearts DVD
I have always liked this movie and had been meaning to purchase it for quite a long time but I could never find it in stores and although Amazon sold it, it was through a third party, which I was a bit wary of. Also, because Amazon wasn't the 'seller', it was rather more expensive that I would normally pay for an older movie. Having said all this, the movie itself is great. I always think of it as one of those movies that is really quite good, but was never made much of a fuss of at the time it originally came out and has somewhat 'slipped through the cracks' over the years..
