Building Confidence in Your Child

some good info, nothing groundbreaking
Just a heads up- for those of you who aren’t Christian conservative, you might want to choose another book. I didn’t look into this guy’s background and I’m upset I didn’t. The first 100 pages were OK, some good info, nothing groundbreaking, but useful I suppose. Then he started getting into the role of TV and “values”. A few anti-homosexual comments and I was turned off. I won’t be getting advice about how to raise my child from this guy. Thanks, but no thanks.

A must-read for parents!
Dr. James Dobson is a trusted source for Christian families seeking support. In this book he gives insight into cause of the low self esteem epidemic we're facing - a lack of Biblical values being taught and honored throughout society and the attack of Satan through the media to devalue human life with a false set of values based on impossible -to-attain physical beauty, wealth, and fame. He also gives direction for how we as parents can instill in our children the truth - that their value and worth comes from God, regardless of their looks or abilities or lack thereof. I highly recommend this book!

HOW TO MAKE IT THROUGH MOTHERHOOD (or step-motherhood) WITH SOME SANITY!
I have read Dr Dobson since 1976, when someone gave me this book called "Dare to Discipline!". It was not a how-to-beat your kid book! It explained why your child did the things she/he "did to you" that "made you crazy". It was funny and so clear, it made me laugh and oh, did it make me CRY! My first child was so bright and talked at 18 mths(fluently, I kid you not) that I mistook his questions for "challenges to my authority! We went 'round and 'round as the Dr and the dog did in the intro to this book! It is funny in the book but it is not now when he is a grown man who suspects that I favored his sister because a woman gave me a book that taught me how to be a better mother. If you know anyone who is going to have a baby or grandbaby, PLEASE give them the book, this one, or the Strong Willed one, they will understand so much more! I haven't read the Tantrum, or the others but you can order samples on your "devices" or buy used/new hard/paperbacks! Try them!

A must read for parents
This is a book every parent should have. It addresses the realities kids face that most parents have forgotten about and so helps to build understanding. There are so many things out there that makes kids feel inferior. This book is a must to build a solid sense of identity in your child and will create intimacy between parent and child. I recommend it to every parent I know.

Excellent in every way
Best source I know for how to raise children. Dobson is a master teacher. I trusted him when I was raising my own children, and I still use this with my grandchildren. I highly recommend this book to parents at any stage.

Good read to help your children
Good ideas in the book. He made me look at intimation in my own life as well as my childrens. He is a little pro-spanking which didnt bother me, but might bother some people. He goes over confidence of special needs children, adolescents, and general children population.

not the book for you...
Although the author makes good points on raising confident children, he expresses old ideas when it comes to discipline (spanking), homosexuality and sexuality in general. I was greatly disappointed to see a "doctor" write so much on religion. I thought I was going to read a book that would give me theory as well as some good ideas to use in my reception (kindergarten) classroom and at home. Instead I read a homophobic book about how he raised his children in his home. If I knew this, I wouldn't have bought it. Maybe this will stop someone else from making the same mistake.
