What makes these erasers different from just a sponge (that's what they look like)? What scientifically speaking makes them special?

Excellent question. A sponge would disintegrate on multiple hard contacts with another surface. The chemicals in the markers would help this process along. These erasers have matrlerial that makes them more durable to multiple uses and stands up better to the markers. All they need is to be washed and dried every now and then. Sponges may be able to do the same thing, but would not last as long.

Can you wash them when they full of marker

So sorry it's taken me so long to respond. Yes, when marker gets on the eraser you can rinse it off. It's a great white board eraser!

Can these work on chalkboards?

The smooth side might, but for traditional chalkboards, I recommend the sturdier, tougher erasers. These would fall apart quicker on a chalkboard.

Can these be used as an everyday dry erase eraser (i.e. without adding water)? Or more designed for a thorough board cleaning (w/out using cleanser)?

I use them everyday without water. They clean the board perfectly and leave no smudges.
