Samples SATURATED WITH CALCIUM still show negative test
I was testing samples of my pool water. I followed the instructions included with the kit precisely. At a certain point in the instructions it says the sample should turn red if calcium is present. It never turned red when I added calcium to pool. So I decided to test the kit with a sample that is saturated with calcium. When I tested a 5 gallon bucket of water with a pound of calcium dissolved in it, the sample still did not turn red to show the presence of calcium. Therefore, the test kit does not work because it cannot produce a positive test for calcium when calcium was most definitely present in a sample of water SATURATED with calcium. Useless. Defective product. Now I probably have TOO MUCH calcium in my pool water. Thanks!!

I think it measures just calcium, not "total hardness"...
I think it measures just calcium, not "total hardness".This kit reports my water softener softened water at near zero (show some hardness with indicator, but first drop of reagent turns color).Other kits I've bought seem to measure "total hardness" and show the water coming out of my softener as still fairly hard (I assume they are reporting the sodium ions).Reports in 10ppm/drop.(Or you can fill vial to different level and measure in 25ppm/drop to save time/reagent, which is nice in high hardness water).

If you have a water softener, you should have this kit.
Don't ever waste your money on paper test strips, for anything. This kit is professional grade, gives accurate and repeatable measurements, and is easy to use for anyone who can read. You should test your water softener a few times each year to be sure it is working. It is most important to test your softener just before it is going to regenerate. (You should always see clear blue color as soon as you add the indicator solution. With a working softener, you should never need to do the last step, which is adding reagent drops.)

Easy calculations
Finally able to get my calcium hardness level corrected using this kit. My pool builder recommended I check calcium hardness every 3 months but I will check every 2 months just because I'm paranoid! You do use a lot of drops to test your water levels but again you are not testing that often so no big deal. Definitely recommend.

Easy to use.
Just what I wanted to test my home's water hardness pre and post water softener. It is simple to use and provides measurements in 10 ppm increments.

A good test kit
My pool man kept giving me conflicting figures on calcium solids, so I bought this kit. Now I can trust the figures. (I think the pool guy talks to his girlfriend while he's taking readings, and doesn't necessarily watch what he's doing.) This kit is easy to use. I'm very pleased.

great for home testers
Nice to have this kit. Helps identify calcium balance and verify pool testers results. Works well with pool test kits that don't check for calcium. Don't trust test strips for the precision needed for home checking.
