Incredibly underrated
This movie is hilarious and so underrated. I loved it when it came out and I love it still - even if Adam Brody’s voice is so bizarre to me now as an adult. It’s endlessly quotable and even more relatable to me now as a mom of teen and tween girls.

Confident cast in an ultimately awkward film.
[Major Spoiler Alert; please don't read any further if you don't want to know what happens in this movie.] Released in 2007, "In the Land of Women" tries to be innovative, and it actually does succeed there while also being aptly titled in that Adam Brody, who plays 26-year-old "Carter," seems to be surrounded by women, but he is still trying to find his niche in life, especially after his pretty GF model dumps him. When he sees how worried his mom (JoBeth Williams, the original "Poltergeist") is about her mom/his grandma (Olympia Dukakis), Carter figures that it's a perfect escape for him to leave his worries behind, so he suggests that he go alone to check on his granny while also spending quality time with her. Once there, Carter meets his grandma's new neighbors right across the street (I guess it had been a while since his last visit), played by Meg Ryan ("Sarah") and her high-school-aged daughter played by Kristen Stewart ("Lucy"), and doesn't necessarily seem smitten with either one. But, apparently Sarah becomes smitten with the much-younger Carter because, after she confides in him on one of their walks about her husband's infidelity and even that she has breast cancer (wow, big news so soon, to a stranger), she inexplicably feels that it's the right time to make her move on Carter! Say what? Carter takes their little affair way too much in stride and then even seems poised to start a relationship with Lucy! Oh, did I mention Carter is a soft-porn movie writer? I kid you not. Yes, I felt terribly sorry for the character of Sarah (my Mom passed of breast cancer), but that doesn't mean I have to like this jumbled effort at sincere sentiment that is hardly uplifting or stirring, although the cast seemed adept and assertive throughout. Somewhat surprisingly, it is actually Dukakis and the actress who plays Lucy's younger sister who are the most likeable in the cast, but even that asset is nearly erased by scenes like the last one between Carter and Sarah, which takes place just after a very sad event, but you wouldn't know that by witnessing Carter's almost too-upbeat mood. Then, to close the film, there's even a desperate, trite, last-ditch scene with Carter and another girl where we're supposed to think that Carter's dreams may still come true! Wow. Only recommended for Stewart and Ryan fans, and perhaps it would have helped if Ryan and Williams had been cast in their opposite roles, but the Sarah-Carter relationship just felt uncomfortable. Filmed in British Columbia and Los Angeles.

Entertaining and poignant movie with extraordinary acting!
Adam Brody plays a heartbroken young man who leaves L.A. to live in Michigan with his eccentric grandmother (Olympia Dukakis), who's certain she is dying. There, he meets neighbor (Meg Ryan), who's diagnosed with cancer and is questioning her relevance in life. Kristen Stewart (playing the role of Ryan's daughter) is going through the angst of teen years and as most teen girls are, is perpetually mad at her mother. Brody's character helps put everything in place for Ryan and Stewart, and his rather bizarre grandmother eventually helps set him on the path to figuring out himself. Ryan turns in her typical outstanding, expressive performance; Dukakis adds just the right touch of levity to an otherwise serious (but captivating!) film; Stewart is very real and human, playing her usual sullen role to perfection, and Brody couldn't have been any better. (By the way, the girl playing Stewart's younger sister is a refreshing delight!). I absolutely loved this movie and will definitely watch it again! No question: five stars!

Well done, great acting
I bought "Land of women" because I'm collecting all movies with K-Stew. I normally do not watch this type of movie. After viewing it for the first time, I set it aside and played it again a few weeks later. The writing was excellent. The selection of actors was excellent. The story was excellent.K-Stew gave a great performance. She is grossly under-appreciated as an actress. She has continued to grow in her craft and has shown an ability to play any role from sweetheart to vampire. She has certain mannerisms that some use to discredit her. Her mannerisms are in fact, to her credit. Many great actors displayed the same characteristics from film to film. Jackie Gleason, Bert Lancaster, Natalie Wood, Natalie Portman, Jodie Foster, Tom Cruise, John Wayne, Bratt Pit, to name a few, carry their personal mannerisms from film to film. Kristen Stewart is no different. She is just more consistent. One identifies instantly when watching any of the actors mentioned above, by their mannerisms. Of course, K-Stew is more beautiful than most. This DVD is definitely a Buy at a tiny price. Go for it.

Started out wonderful,,,,but
It was very convoluted, the story got lost, and could have been done better. It had great actors in it. Too bad

Steve's Review
I didn't quite know what to expect with this movie, I kind of rented it out of curiosity and also because I'm a longtime Meg Ryan fan. It is a good movie about life in general and about people dealing with the problems in their everyday lives. Good characters and a good storyline, most guys would probably consider it a chick flick but it's really not. Hey, I like to see stuff being blown up as much as the next guy but sometimes it kind of nice to consider a change of pace so check it out.

Possibly classed as a chick flick
I enjoyed this, there was pathos with the illness involved. The coming of age, looking after someone other than himself motif. The love interest and friendships that develop - good one. : )

encouraging, but not enough
too bad producers just can't seem to produce beyond the box that younger men, in fact, may find older women attractive and long-term material. It has become cliché that much older men are celebrated for dating much younger women. How about vice versa? Break the dusty taboos, ladies and gentlemen! There is a passionate kiss scene, the rest is cultural barrier. I hope virtual reality can give writers and producers a more realistic picture of the latest.I'm rating this movie 3 stars for it's narrow mindedness that it cannot surpass.
