does it contain shelac?

Not being a chemist, I'm not sure. But, from using it on many wood spun projects, I would say no. being, If after application and short dry time you rub or spin project to hard, it is removed. Shelac once dried is very hard to spin remove on a lathe. This seals at a microscopic level in the fibers of the wood you can't even see. Once dry allows for top coating of your choice to help a shine stand out.

I'm looking for a us equivalent of the german sanding sealant "clou"? would this seal pear wood i could finish with 00 steel wool?

Yes, it will seal pear wood. It is the best sealer I have used over my 7 years of turning wood full time. I do not know the german brand.

Would this product be good for sealing wood like mesquite? I'm making some kitchen knives and would like to use mesquite for the handle scales.

I believe it would, I suggest you never leave them in water, bad for the wood.
