Memory Wall: Stories

A lovely collection of stories that examine, in wildly different ways, the form and [dis]function of memory. Each story is peopled by realistic and poignant expressions of our shared humanity. The characters and notions set within these vignettes will remain with the reader long after the final page.

While the opening short story was a struggle to read at first, but the time it ended and for all the remaining shorts, I grew more and more involved. The author pulled me in, and by the time I read Afterworld, I was convinced of his quality.

Anthony Doerr’s unsettling short stories include precisely worded pictures of unusual environments in which extraordinarily well delineated characters live, love, fear, breathe, remember and forget. This author has the ability to create engrossing scenarios that readers can vividly see and experience, in multiple dimensions.

Each of the stories left me out of breath and wanting more. I will read them all again and again with pleasure.

Doerr gets it every time. This was not as epic as All the Light we cannot see but it was an overall meaningful book. I’m looking forward to reading a few of his others.

Doerr delves in a variety of ways into answers for life’s enduring questions. He does so with great empathy and engrossing style. These stories inhabit one’s mind and emotions.

I am not a fan of short story collections. But these were so well written that I would recommend them to someone like myself—a reluctant reader of this genre. Such brilliantly crafted stories around the theme of memory! Just read them. Forget that they are short stories.

Predictably some stories are a little better than others but some, my goodness, are achingly haunting. Incredibly well written in places. Sounds terrible but rather hard to believe this is an American author. He really is something special.

Each one of these carefully crafted tales holds the reader - sometimes gently, sometimes with force - always ultimately with enjoyment as the gift left behind.Bravo sir.

Having read All the Light We Cannot See I wanted to try more books by Anthony Doerr. I was not disappointed each story is brilliant.

I went to school in SA, I could smell the story all the way through. A good read, a good story, thought provoking but sometimes a little unrealistic.
