U.S. Army Hand-to-Hand Combat Handbook: Training, Ground-Fighting, Takedowns And Throws: Strikes, Handheld Weapons, Standing Defense, Group Tactics

A fair manual on the new U.S. Army Hand-to-Hand combat program.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Army moved away from the previous World War 11 combatives program and has now replaced it with mostly UFC (Gracie Jiu-jitsu) sport techniques. As a lifetime student of the martial arts, studying numerous combat systems, including Gracie and other Jujitsu systems, I have enormous respect for this system. However, when we are talking about life and death situations, many of the grappling moves (with the exception of chokes), are impractical for the military. Though the grappling methods can give a great workout to the troops, they are designed for sport rather than serious street combat situations. One of the statements made several times in this manual is the following: "Strikes are an inefficient method of ending a fight." Not only is this a completely false statement, but it is also a dangerous false assumption. All you have to do is watch the recent UFC fights and it is clear that the most common fight enders are taking the subject down and pound on him with strikes until the referee stops the fight. The second most common fighter ender in the UFC fights is the choke, using various methods. With this in mind, one should read this book with an open mind because there are a lot of good things one can learn, such as the strikes, chokes and arm locks. The photos showing both participants in Cameos are also a bad idea. The clothing makes it very difficult to actually see the grappling techniques. In conclusion, it is hoped the Army reconsiders many of these techniques and return to the tried and true combatives such as John Kerry's American Combatives, Krav Maga system, the Kelly McCain system, the Jim Wagner's system and other reality-based combat systems. In conclusion, this manual will be of interest to anyone who is into the military hand-to-hand methods, but keep in mind the above comments when it comes to reality-based combat system.Rating: 3 stars Joseph J. OK
I guess it is what it is its an army manual and would be a lot better if it had a DVD with it to demonstrate the technique. I realize the army uses instructors when teaching this.

for the daydreamers/bedroom wrestlers
this book sucks, the descriptions of how to is maybe 4 sentence(s) long, with the pictures black and white and as mentioned up above both guys are in camo making it difficult to study.no detailed text whatsoever. avoid unless you want to be a pillow/couch ufc champion

Very good book on what the Army is using for Combative Hand To Hand Combat. Approached with a modern understanding of what REAL hand to hand is all about.
