StarTech.com USB to DVI External Video Dual or Multi Monitor Video Card Adapter - 1440x900 - USB to DVI Graphics Adapter M/F

I wanted to have to monitors for my desktop at home, but my computer did not have the capabilities. Dell and Staples and other sources I contacted had everything from buying additional programming for my desktop to other gadgets that all cost well over $100. A friend of mine told me that she uses this product for her 3rd monitor with no problems, so I bought it. I had "techy" people I know insist that it wouldn't work because "you can't send video through a USB." Well, when it came I plugged it in, which was very easy to do and in about 2 minutes had 2 monitors working with no problems at all. Showed all those that, in deed, it could be done!

I purchased the StarTech DVI adapter in Aug 2011, and it died suddenly in Nov 2012. I had never had a problem with it before. I'm on a Windows 7 Dell going out to two Dell monitors plus one ViewSonic monitor. The split goes to the second Dell monitor. Right now it looks like this will be an annual expense. I'll find some other solution-

I love this it has worked from day one and I can use my extra monitor when I work from home. I have a better set up at home than I do at work now.

This adapter increased the resolution of my 22" ViewSonic LED 1080p Full-HD flat panel monitor immediately. BUT, the adpater interferes with and prevents Windows7 SLEEP mode and LOCK Mode by not allowing the picture to restablish after the monitor has gone into an energy-saving mode. I had to FORCE a reboot EVERY time after evoking SLEEP or LOCK mode to get the picture back. There is the same problem if you simply leave the computer and monitor on for awhile and the energy-saving mode is evoked because of user inactivity. You'll have to FORCE a reboot to get the picture back. Entirely unacceptable. I can't speak for WindowsXP or Linux users, but for Windows7 users, this adapter is entirely unacceptable.

There is an issue with these adapters where the screen does not refresh normally. Specifically this impacts browsers as the selections you make on websites are not refreshed on the screen, making it look like nothing happened.

This product does NOT function properly out of the box, neither on win7 nor win8. Windows will automatically download a driver which either does not work, or reduces the output to something like 640x480p. I got mine working well after I downloaded a different driver from StarTech, called 'trigger'. After that, the screens correctly wake and sleep with the PC, and the computer recognises the native screen resolution. The refresh rate is good enough for browsing and typing, but no good for gaming.

The video seems to drag a lot. I tried downloading the updated drivers for it but I still get the same result.

Have purchased several of these to add dual monitors to Ultra small form factor PCs. Works great, no complaints. Very easy to install.
