Rome's Enemies (2): Gallic & British Celts (Men-at-Arms)

Excellent Introduction to the Celts
Though this book is now 35+ years old, it is still an excellent introduction to the Celts. The book is divided into three parts. Part One provides an overview of Celtic society and culture. Part Two describes the armor, weapons, and ethos of the Celtic warrior. Part Three (a strong 14 pages) gives brief accounts of significant Roman-Celtic conflicts including the Cimbrian Wars, Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars, the invasion of Britain, Boudicca’s rebellion, and the quieting of the frontiers under Agricola. All in all, this is a very handy and useful volume. It won’t answer every question you have about the Celts and their style of warfare, but it will give you with a solid foundation for future study. It will also be a great quick reference for Celtic topics.

McBride does it again
Overall, the text of this book is not worth much (the information on the helmets, swords, etc. can be found just about anywhere, and often in greater detail, while the section on 'Celtic' history is just plain weak), but McBride's beautiful artwork, if nothing else, could make it a worthy purchase. Some of the plates in this book,, notably 'D' showing a chieftain in a chariot beign followed by a pack of curious local children and dogs, are simply spectacular. If you are looking for a good Osprey-style intro to the warriors of the proud, disparate tribes of Gaul and Britannia, try Stephen Allen's 'Celtic Warrior 300 BC - AD 100', it is better-researched, has more material, and the artwork is almost as good. But, if you are a devoted fan of Angus McBride, buy this book!

ANGUS McBRIDE IS KING!!!!!!!!!!!11111
Angus McBride is the reason and text on this Iron Age culture that lived in Europe from Spain to Germany from Scotland to Turkey. Unlike the Romans who left much documentary evidence as to who they were and what they did, we only have the writings of the enemies of the Celts, so this book depends heavily on archeological evidence. But really, it's Angus's reconstructions of Celt warriors in action that both brought this book to life and got me hooked on both Angus's artwork as well as Osprey publications.Angus passed away in 2007 and will be missed, but his influence will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Awesomely Osprey!
Read any osprey publication and you be speaking like an authoritarian by the end of it, jam packed books with detailed information. This book is brilliant, no need to troll through volumes of books to find a few lines of information on Gallic and British celts, the works already been done for you here and compiled in an easily understood format! Hopefully one day i will own every single book they have!!

Great Snippets of Insight
These books have the ability to bring alive some of the way our ancestors may have lived. Again, it has snippets of info that make you visulise how Celts of Europe lived. There are also some very wonderful diagrams too.
