Three CD set. Shalamar broke onto the disco scene in 1977, but 2019 marks the 40th Anniversary of the classic line-up formation of Howard Hewett, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel, who set the UK charts alight throughout the early '80s with hits like 'Dead Giveaway' and 'There It Is.' From their debut disco-fied Motown medley, 'Uptown Festival,' Shalamar became constant hit-makers on both the US R&B charts and the UK pop charts, scoring with the dance-floor classics 'Take That To The Bank,' 'The Second Time Around' and 'Make That Move.' While promoting A Night To Remember' on Top of the Pops in 1982, Jeffrey Daniel introduced UK audiences to the moon walk and started a body popping craze across the country. This collection, features all 24 of Shalamar's US and UK top 40 chart singles, all of which are included here in for the first time in their full-length versions and 12" disco mixes on this 42-track set.

One of the best groups of the 80s!!
One of the most underrated groups of the 80s. They defined and early 80s for me. Stills gives me goosebumps to this day. Great collection. Don’t miss it.

Workmanlike collection of Shalamar's complete recording career
Yet another in Demon Records burgeoning 'Gold' series sees Shalamar take centre stage. I was astounded to hear that the group made 10 albums between 1977 and 1990, broadly knowing the 'classic' line-up from the period in the early 1980's where they had a series of major hits with Jodi Watley, Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett; but just like Trigger's broom the career of the band saw significant line-up changes that meant they ended their recording career with no original members. Every one of those albums is represented in this 41 track collection, with all the big hits present and correct - some of them in their full length 12" dance versions which are both rare and well worth having; together with three modern day remixes as bonuses that add nothing at all to proceedings fleshing out CD3.What became the classic SOLAR sound isn't quite developed on their debut, entirely sung by session singers and represented by Smokey Robinson's "Ooh Baby, Baby" and a long 10 track medley of Motown hits styled "Uptown Festival". It's a shaky start and neither adds a lot. By the time of second album "Disco Gardens" Watley and Daniel were on board, but with Gerald Brown the third member. Early Top 20 hit "Take That To The Bank" is the choice pick from this album being more embedded in disco than their later hits, backed up by two album tracks "Stay Close To Love" and "Leave It All Up To Love".The compilation wisely concentrates on pulling more tracks from the classic line up who were together in time for 1979's third album "Big Fun", not to be confused with the Inner City song of the same name. Choice pick from this album is "The Second Time Around", a US No.1 Dance hit, although I also like the original version of "Right In The Socket" but can't listen to the modern day remix. Despite having success in the U.S. the group at this time hadn't hit the gravy train in the U.K. and that continued during 4th album "Three for Love" with all three singles from that album represented having U.S. success but not troubling the U.K. charts: "Full of Fire", "Make That Move" and "This Is for the Lover in You" and all pointing the way towards that U.K. breakthrough.1981's "Go For It" continued that theme of U.S. success, with single "Sweeter as the Days Go By" the key pick. However it was in 1982 that the group really hit their stride with "Friends", recorded simultaneously with "Go For It" and featuring four giant U.K. Hit singles: "A Night To Remember" which kicks off disc 1, the sublime title track, the wonderful "There It Is" and "I Can Make You Feel Good". This is where Shalamar really came into their own with a slightly harder-edged sound, still smooth but owing more to soul than the disco tinged albums that preceded it. That success continued through to 1983's "The Look" with "Dead Givaway" here in it's marvellous 12" format and "Disappearing Act" also present.Sadly the group imploded after this release, losing Watley and Daniel but still managed to release three further albums. Movie tie ins kept the group in the public eye with "Dancing In The Sheets" gracing the "Footloose" soundtrack and "Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills" fitting right in with the overall sound of "Beverly Hills Cop".This is a workmanlike representation of the group's complete history, with all the U.K. hits present and correct as well as many U.S. ones which casual listeners may be less familiar with. For just £5 I think that this is a good overview of the groups tumultuous line up changes and gives a chance to dip into the deeper catalogue thanks to quite a few album tracks being used to flesh the collection out, but which do see the quality control lever dip occasionally. Some listeners might prefer one of the many "Greatest Hits" packages by this group, but at this price it's easy enough to burn just those classic hit singles into your music library.

A comprehensive collection of their finest work!
Great to have all of Shalamars hits on one CD set! Lots of the lesser known hits have really grown on me, "For the lover in you" and "Full of Fire", which I wasnt awre of before. Its a shame their new single "The Real Thing" wasnt included, but I understand the need to keep the "greatest hits" in the manner of previous line ups. The only dissappiintment is on CD 3 with the remixes, which add nothing to the original 12 inch singles. A missed opportunity! Otherwise, a fine testimony to a band I have loved ever since "Take that to the bank" blew me away, back at the end of the 70's.

Great compilation with some great 12'' mixes
Great budget compilation. Contains all their biggest hits in their full versions. Also a bonus CD of 12'' mixes, some hard to find. The 'My Girl Loves Me (12'' Dance Mix)' is a great find, especially as the recent Japanese Editions of their albums was meant to include it but just repeated the shorter album mix. A must buy.
