Royal Catchfly is a 3' to 4' tall native perennial named for the sticky flower parts that trap insects. The plant features spreading clusters of 2" wide strikingly beautiful scarlet red tubular flowers with 5 spreading petals. Royal Catchfly requires dry to medium, well drained soils in full sun or partial shade. It is most often found in dry rocky open woods, woods margins, prairies, remnant grasslands, and along railroads. Royal Catchfly is listed as rare, threatened, or endangered in 6 of the 12 central and southern states included in its native distribution. It is often difficult to establish from seed, but the bright showy scarlet red flowers make the effort worthwhile for many gardeners. The red flowers attract hummingbirds.
