Captain's ChoiceNorth Aftershave, 4 Ounce

First impressions.The Scent of Disappointment.As a man who has purchased a variety of aftershaves in the sub $10 range, I am willing to say that I had some expectations for NORTH. I've dabbled with essential oils for 7 years so I anticipated some complexity in what I was about to put on my face. After showing and splashing this on, I find myself completely underwhelmed. Gin. I like gin and I expected that perhaps juniper would be the dominant aspect of this selection, but I did not expect it to be the only scent present. It smelled like I had splashed pure gin on my face. The only difference may be that if I had used gin, the scent may have lasted longer. Within 5 minutes I had nothing. No undertones, no middle or top notes, just nothing.I'll admit, I didn't shave beforehand, so I can't really give an accurate face feel, so I may update this to report anything notable there. On smell alone, I can't recommend this product.12/9/15I feel this product has earned an edit to my review. Though I didn't care for the scent at first, I decided to go ahead and use the product on occasion as I didn't just want to be wasteful. It was a change of pace for me as I usually use Captain's Choice Sandalwood, which I've been happy with from the get-go. It may be that I've used this product often enough for the scent to have grown on me, but what I'm honestly feeling at this moment is that this may be more of a seasonal scent than I had originally expected. I feel like I would be going out on a limb to give it 4 stars in winter, but maybe that would be appropriate. As I stated before, this product still smells like gin...but I still like gin and perhaps this product smells like rather good gin.

Probably a really great aftershave. I mean, the bottle I received smelled outstanding. I was really, really looking forward to using it today when it came. When I opened the package, it was just a couple pieces of glass slightly resembling the Captain's aftershave bottle stuck to one flimsy layer of bubble wrap. The box was bone dry and didn't even smell as though it had absorbed anything, and so I'm pretty sure this bottle was broken, drained completely, then thrown into a new box and sent to me as though I wouldn't notice.It was a good try, I will admit. But unfortunately I noticed something was up when I measured zero ounces of after shave in the container, despite the fact I had paid for exactly 4 ounces of aftershave.At any rate, I was able to get in a chat with a customer service rep named Luis. He got me a refund without even asking for pictures or information, which was awesome! So I'm still a happily loyal Amazon customer. I can't complain. I'm probably going to reorder this aftershave since I really do want to use it, although I am hesitant to wait for shipping on what may be just another box of sticky glass shards.

I was hoping this was going to be a pine/wood scent as was described by other reviewers, but I found this to not be the case. The initial scent straight from the bottle is that of gin. This is likely due to the use of juniper essential oils, but I mean it literally smells like I'm rubbing gin on my face. However, the gin scent does not linger long and it quickly evolves into something else. Some reviewers have described the scent as pine, but I am not smelling this at all. I am picking up a strong/warm clove scent, which also is not a scent that I care for. To me, it smells like a candle you might find in a store around Christmas time (think Christmas spice or something like that). If these are scents that appeal to you then you may like this aftershave, however be forewarned that the scent dissipates very quickly. I used some this morning and then about 15 minutes later asked my wife if she could smell anything and she could not.That's not to say that this isn't a good brand. My face did feel refreshed/invigorated post shave. The packaging is also nice and I might even try a different scent from them, but it is rather expensive at $18 per bottle so I am reluctant to buy anything without smelling it first.

When I first started shaving using a safety razor, a friend of mine gave me a bottle of Captains Choice North. I really liked it. I ordered a bottle of Bay Rum and felt that the smell was a bit overpowering. I went back to using North and I'm glad I did. It has a slight burn when you first put it on, but then it cools off.

Purchased both 'Venture' and 'Captain's Choice' aftershaves as gifts for my husband. He tells me both are refreshing and pleasant to his skin. Both fragrances, however, seem very fleeting. The scents are wonderful right from the bottle, but are literally gone within 5 minutes of application. As he does not like to wear heavy colognes, the lighter scents of aftershave are his preference; but of the various fragrances he has used over the years, none have faded quite so quickly as these two.

I like the cat o nine tails and the bay rum because they are two extremes of the Bay Rum aftershaves. However I was a bit disappointed in this one. It has a slight pine scent at first that disappears and you are left with what appears to be Bay Rum aftershave. If you already have their Bay Rum then don’t waste your money unless you are out of Bay Rum and want to try something very similar with a different label.

I have been using the Captins products for several years. They leave my face feeling smooth and soft. On those days that I get a rough shave it calms and soothes the skin. Nothing out there better.I like that the scent doesn't linger so it doesn't clash with my cologne. But my ice tells me that she can still smell it on my face at night ...: and that's a good thing.

Smells like gin directly from the bottle and like cloves within 2 minutes on your face. By 10 minutes the scent is gone. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the smell, but love it as a temporary get up to my morning. As for the performance of the aftershave, it is nothing short of superb. Simple ingredients that are time tested. Leaves my face feeling great and myself feeling even better.
