Dogs are from Neptune - Good Training Information
After struggling through The Culture Clash, I found Dogs are from Neptune to be a much easier, more outlined reading experience. The book is organized around problem areas and while much of the training recommendations are repeated, it still gives the reader clear cut, easy to follow training suggestions. I have used the book as a resource guide many times when working with my cattle dog foster dogs and coaching other foster families. Dog owners looking for a quick fix may be dismayed at the amount of training she recommends to solve dog behavior issues. However, I have found her suggestions to work well. I still recommend The Culture Clash as a necessary read along with Dogs are from Neptune, however expect this book to be much easier to follow.

Not all dogs can like strangers
Assumes all dogs need to be social butterflies with people and other dogs. So are we to euthanize the already adult dogs who are never going to like strangers? I think you should love the dog you're with. Make the best of things and protect your dog from people who would put their faces in your dog's face or hands into your dogs bowl.

Not the Same as the 1st Edition
I borrowed the first edition from my Rescue group to read and liked it so much that I wanted my own copy. I was astonished to discover that the beginning 15 paged had been completely eliminated. In the 1st Edition, she takes time to explain the different training methods (Classical Conditioning, Operational Conditioning, Aversive, etc) and the benefits & drawbacks. Then talks about her theories & philosophy (Suburban Dog Syndrome) and the method she prefers & why followed by the how-to. In the new edition, it is divided by problem into chapters and leads of with a case study followed by the how-to with a tiny smattering as to why. I guess if you just want to jump in and start following instructions that’s fine. However, I feel the more fully I understand what is occurring, especially in the case of aggression, the better I am able to implement the training correctly, evaluate situations & react appropriately which was the whole reason I wanted a copy of my own.VERY disappointed 😔

Great suggestions~
This book was a little different from what I expected- It is basically situations that Jean encountered over a period of time in dog training, and the method she applied to correct the behavior. Still, very interesting and educational. If you own a dog or are interested in training, it is a good resource to have.

Read It Before
Brushing up on basics before I add another to the pack. I have read this before and needed to remind myself of a number of things. So many new techniques and so much new information since this was written, but it continues to be a much-needed guide to the personality and development of dogs.

A useful quick reference for serious trainers and behaviourists
A bit old fashioned now, and some of the thinking has been updated. Jean Donaldson is always a good read though and the format of short question and answer chapters makes it a useful quick reference for serious trainers and behaviourists. I think that the lost the argument on buying a vehicle to suit her dogs though!
