Work slowly but the end result is great
I absolutely love Jobe stakes for evergreens. I first used them years ago when we decided to plant about eight 6 ft. pine trees in front of our property to create a privacy "fence" along the road. They are easy to apply. You just "hammer" them into the ground away from the tree root ball based upon the tree size and wait. I highly recommend using a small mallet to hammer them in and wait until the ground is soft. It makes it a lot easier to install them. They are slow release, so the trees slowly get the fertilizer that they need over time. We were amazed at how well they worked. It takes a few years because evergreens aren't known for their speed in growing, but once they start, they take off. Our 6 ft. trees are now well over 12 ft. and are still going strong. It really is one of those put them in the ground and forget about it. They will do what they're supposed to. They're a little pricey, but I think they're well worth it because they work so well.

They work!
Follow the directions! If they aren't sufficient, then google how close you should put towards the trunk & roots. I'm thinking it's about where the canopy of the tree/bush reaches. That keeps it away from being right at the roots. Use a tool to put the fertilizer spike deep enough into the ground. We had two evergreen Arborvitaes that were looking spindly and sickly for the last year (ever since we'd planted them)... and now they are full and looking greener all the time. Growth has returned and really working. Mulch at bottom of the trees are important too- but not up to the trunk area. Also have a small Magnolia tree that was puny and struggling to survive it's first year of transplant from a small sapling. Amazing! It put on like 30 new leaves within a month or two. I will add here, that I also sprayed the existing old leaves and trunk with copper fungicide, as the old leaves had spots on them.So that could have helped too. I bought the copper fungicide through Amazon, so I will be rating it as well. This is a well-earned 5 star!!

Have Been Using for Years
My dad told me to fertilize our everygreens and I have been every year and what a difference it makes! This is his "go to" brand forever. They are easy to use -- come with plastic pounding top but you need to supply the mallot to pound in. I do recommend waiting to place in the ground after a fresh rain -- softer ground makes it easier and they don't break.
