The Immigrant

Did not really hold my interest. I had expected it to be more pronounced. The female lead is beautiful, and her soulful eyes are quite haunting; but the film, overall, did not meet my expectations. I really wanted to see the male lead in an excellent role, for he has been criticized publicly for years, although I saw him in a period performance with Russell Crowe, in which he was superb in his role. Wish I could give this movie five stars, but I simply cannot. I recommend it for a rainy afternoon, when perhaps the viewer wants a more relaxing film. Certainly, there was action in this film and some violence (violence I can do without), but some of the story lines did not seem realistic to me. As a friend once told me, after I had expected a film to be truly realistic, "It is only a movie." Still, I expected a little more from this film than I received. I do not regret watching it, but I would not care to see it again. That is how I measure the success of a film: that I would love to watch it again. For example, I've seen GOND WITH THE WIND more than 60 times. After that many viewings over the years, I stopped counting. Of course, this film did not present itself in the same caliber, but, again, I expected more.

First of all you have to love a pure story, if you need explosions or the like, this movie is not for you. Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) and her sister sail to New York from their native Poland in search of a new start and the American dream. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda (Angela Sarafyan) is ill, and the two women are separated. Ewa runs afoul of Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. Orlando (Jeremy Renner) - - restores her self-belief and tries to get her away from his cousin Bruno. There are complications on all sides and you can't really hate Bruno either. Ewa tries but can't either. As I said, pure story and it is, as someone else said very slow moving at many times. Stick with it though. marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy renner are all wonderful.

I found this movie very moving. My Polish and Italian grandparents came through Ellis Island and this movie echoed some of what they described. James Gray's narrative in the extras about his writing this movie based on his Jewish family's stories amplifies on immigrants experiences. Anyone who has family members who emigrated in the early 1900's will appreciate the strength and determination that gave their children a better life. My Polish grandmother once described running from Russian Cossacks and there is a scene in the movie where a scene is recreated of A similar incident. The scene gave me chills because the portrayal of terror allowed me to experience in some small way what it must have been like!

The Immigrant is an unabashedly old-fashioned melodrama. It is also an excellent movie. Even the look of the film (the cinematography, the scenography) has the feeling of a 1930's movie. The three main actors, Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner are very good in their roles. Although after having seen so many movies with Joaquin Phoenix interpreting people with different kinds of mental diseases, I wonder if he can really do anything else. Very impressive work by James Gray, the director.

I have followed the movie career of director/writer James Grey, and find his work to be excellent. I especially enjoy hearing his remarks during the special features, director's commentary. This movie is an enjoyable and interesting story. It is a high quality movie and the actors are very talented. It is one of those movies that you will most likely want to watch at least twice to get it all into perspective.

Like the new take on Phoenix and Renner's approach to these types of characters, but the movie overall was a little slow with no big explosive offerings

With having become a recent Joaquin Phoenix obsessed fan, I rented this because he was in it. Based on the reviews, my expectations weren't high. That might be why I enjoyed it more. And I did enjoy it. Acting was great.

The best part of this movie is the trailer. The actual film is slow moving and confusing. Perhaps with better editing it would have been a better film. However, the story of a sleazy promoter pimping a down and out immigrant girl is thin. On the plus side the acting was quite good as was the cinematography.

Dabei werden sie getrennt, Magda geht aufgrund ihrer Lungenkrankheit für 6 Monate in Quarantäne und ihr droht die Abschiebung. Ewa gelangt, allein, ohne Geld, verzweifelt, auch weil ihre Angehörigen sie nicht abholen, in die Fänge des zwielichtigen aber sehr charmanten Bruno Weiss (Joaquin Phoenix). Er nimmt sie in seiner ritterlich und selbstlos erscheinenden Art auf, hat aber nicht ganz uneigennützige Absichten und zwingt sie schliesslich auch zur Prostitution. Eines Tages lernt Ewa Brunos Cousin - den faszinierenden Magier Orlando (Jeremy Renner) kennen, verliebt sich in ihn. Aber sie sieht in ihm auch eine Chance, dem Alptraum, in den sie hineingeraten ist, zu entkommen. Doch beide, Zauberer wie Zuhälter behaupten, die Schwester befreien zu können. Es entspinnt sich eine gefährliche Ménage-à-trois, die aber nicht die einzige existenzielle Herausforderung in diesem Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten ist....Der Neuanfang auf einem fremden, freien Kontinent, die Sehnsucht nach dem amerikanischen Traum... Doch der amerikanische Traum erstrahlt hier sehr wenig - Ob es die Bewohner sind, die Behörden bei der Einreise, Polizisten – im vermeintlich freien Land ist jeder korrupt, Familienbande zählen kaum etwas, gut ist, was einem selbst nutzt.Der Film erzählt eine menschliche Geschichte wie sie das Leben wohl tausendfach geschrieben hat. Über Verzweiflung und die daraus resultierende Anfälligkeit für Ausnutzung, über Hoffnung und den Wunsch nach einem besseren Leben, über Vorurteile, Verurteilung und Scheinheiligkeit. ...Und in dieser Geschichte auch über ein seltsames Liebeswerben irgendwo zwischen romantischer Buhlerei und sexueller Erpressung. All dies und noch vielmehr streift „The Immigrant“ und hinterlässt dabei auch viele bleibende Emotionen.Trotzdem fehlt der Erzählweise ab und zu ein bisschen die Wirkung. Es ist stets ein auf und ab aus Distanziertheit und Intensität. Vieles passiert einfach, selbst die fürchterlichsten Dinge. Wie selbstverständlich. Doch dann gibt es wiederum auch sehr viele gefühlvolle Momente.Da spricht beispielsweise der charismatische Jeremy Renner als Eröffnung seiner Show über Hoffnung, über Glauben, über Ziele und plötzlich liegt da dieses unbeschreibliche Knistern in der Luft und das bewegt in einem Maße, dass es die Tränen in die Augen drückt.Besonders faszinierend empfand ich auch die Zeichnung der allesamt ambivalenten Figuren . Eine klare Trennlinie zwischen Gut und Böse gibt es nicht. Das gilt vor allem für Bruno. Der Zuhälter nutzt die Frauen aus, die für ihn anschaffen, und manipuliert sie geschickt. Aber seine Gefühle für Ewa sind dennoch echt. Joaquin Phoenix verkörpert diesen vielschichtigen, widersprüchlichen Charakter sehr überzeugend. Noch subtiler und facettenreicher spielt Marion Cotillard die Rolle der Immigrantin Ewa, die sich trotz ihrer Abscheu vor Berührungen und ihrer Gewissensnot prostituiert, um ihrer Schwester helfen zu können. Marion Cotillard wirkt dabei mal zart und verletzlich, dann wieder entschlossen und selbstbewusst.Das Thema ist stets aktuell und brisant: Gerade Flüchtlinge und auch viele andere Menschen in Not müssen sich nicht selten ausbeuten lassen, um überleben zu können.Es ist fast unbegreiflich, dass der Film hierzulande kaum Beachtung fand. Allein schon wegen der Schauspieler ist „The Immigrant“ sehenswert, aber darüber hinaus erzählt James Gray eine packende Geschichte.

Review for dvd only. The dvd has a choice of either french dub, or english language audio with unremovable french subtitles (I have tried on two dvd players and both tell me the disc itself prohibits me turning the subtitles off). This dvd should therefore be avoided like the plague, and the Amazon description should be a lot clearer!

Brilliant moving film.

i didn't give this full marks because of your failure to state that the American version has French subtitles, i think it's Joaquin's most dominant role!
