The Making of a Nurse

Tilda does it again!
I was so happy to find another book by this amazing nurse. I just wish there were more like her around, or maybe what I mean is that there were more nursesw speaking up to tell their part of our story. Too many "administrative" or "professional" nurses who are only interested in academics and personal advancement are publishing their opinions, and not enough of all those amazing nurses who came into the profession to serve and care for others. I know it's not fashionable to talk that way today, and I certainly hope it doesn't give people the idea that we are to be ripped off, but the fact of the matter is that so many of us are actually there not only to make a living, but to help others. This message comes through in Tilda Shalof's book, and I think this is a very imortant message, in a world where people have lost so much trust in others.I was touched to see Tilda's bravery in exposing what made her a nurse and a person who can see others and care for them in spite of differences, which is the core of nursing theory.

I thought this book was a great introduction to the emotion and physical tasks associated with being a nurse. Shalof shares the ups and downs of choosing nursing as a career, and shared realistic stories that I think anyone aspiring to be a nurse should read.

No faking it after twenty years as a nurse
Disclosure: I'm a nurse. If the book read like an autobiography it was because the reader needed to understand that the early path Shalof found her feet on, was the only way to discover the nursing shoes she was destined to wear. Honestly, I didn't think I'd enjoy reading this book as much as I did. It spoke to my heart that nursing is about caring whether you work in an ICU or in home health, in the U.S. or in Canada. My interest waned a bit when she hit parenthood but rekindled when it returned to the stories of her patients and relationships with colleagues. We all have similar stories to tell--Shalof just tells them better!

Seems to lag after a bit
The author starts out in an interesting fashion, but it seems to lag midway to the end. Highlights at times, but needs to move a bit more.

Good motivation
In my second year of nursing school I had a very hard time in one of my clinical rotations. I was having a difficult time believing in myself and whether or not nursing was right for me. At one point I considered dropping out. This book made a huge impact on me as Tilda had similar challenges as myself, and I realized that nurses are all made up of various strengths and weaknesses. I read this book over 6 years ago and it will always have a special place for me. I recommend it to anyone but nursing students have a lot to gain especially by reading this.

A book that stays with you.
There are some books and movies that stay with you, that haunt you, and this is one. If you like a book that makes you think, this is one to read, and read again. It is so rich in detail, you find yourself discovering new things with each read.

Don't Bother
I'm astounded at how many small, meaningless details someone can include in a book and still get it published. As my friend put it: "It's like if you asked a child to write down everything that happened to them for a month and then read it". Terrible prose, focuses on the least interested points of nursing, overall a massive waste of my time.
