Got a lemon
My compass points dead south. I've never seen a compass do that before. It made me laugh because I know these are very good compasses so I guess ill have to get another one. Update, I took a magnet to it to get it pointing the correct way again. Now it works just as well as I knew it was able to.

Good compass, like the ones we use in the military.

This is rated by Silva as a military compass. It cannot be used for night patrol where light discipline is the whole issue. All the other crucial luminous points light up brilliantly. But the north end of the needle does not light up at all. This is a highly rated compass in Britain. I first saw it on a popular orienteering instructional video series. The baseplate has all the features needed for military and civilian land navigation. It is the favourite of the instructor in the videos. I have to seek reimbursement as this particular compass is a dud. I am so disappointed.

This is a specialist piece of kit with the main reading in Mils that would be unsuitable for teaching beginners to navigate with and is not really necessary for the average hill walker for whom degrees are entirely adequate. It's called "Militaire" for a very good reason! Having taught my son to navigate in degrees using a conventional compass I bought him this one as he plans to join the Army and will need to be familiar with navigating in mils. Like any Silva Compass it is excellent with all the necessary scales etc plus a good long edge for setting course between two points. Although the main (outer) reading is in Mils there is also an inner graticule in degrees. My son has quickly adopted to it and I quite like using it too. It's well made, robust and easy to use with gloves on. In the right hands very accurate navigation is possible but of course in that respect its only as good as the person holding it!
