The Iliad (The Samuel Butler Prose Translation)

Am I the only one who finds poetry distracting? For me, prose is the way to go for a translated work, because for poetic translation, the translator must change the meaning to make it fit into the metrical rhythm and rhyme scheme.Good translation, small size of book allows you to carry it around for lunchtime reading.

Having read both The Iliad and The Odyssey in Homer’s hex, I decided to give the prose version a shot. I was blown away by this. You will be skeptical at first, and then you have Homer’s verses interpreted like this: “He sat himself down away from the ships with a face as dark as night, and his silver bow rang death as he shot his arrow in the midst of them.”Epic.

The original classic, well retold in English. Butler's translation does Homer proud, in true declaratory style. I very strongly recommend it.

An excellently translated, easy to understand version of the classic.

Found this in my school library and was gonna check it out but checked the rating beforehand. The book has the Roman names; Juno, Minerva, Mars, the whole thing. Bad quality but proof if you can figure out how to read it.
