I agree with other reviewers about the smell of the bed when it comes out of the package. I knew it ahead of time and allowed time to let it air out before I actually had to use it (and it definitely needed it). I wouldn't recommend using it for seating as is shown in the pictures. I just bought one of those cushions you can get for your bed and lean it against the wall and have been comfortable with that. I'm used to living with a sparsely furnished apartment though. That being said, this would be perfect to use for overnight guests and the like. I slept on an air mattress one night at a relatives house and I thought my back was going to kill me the next day. Never again!!!I laid on it for a few minutes prior to using it for a real night's sleep and decided it was a little firm for my taste so I did put a 1.5" foam pad on it before I put the sheet on. I got a twin size pad but I think full would have worked as well. I also got a Nicamaka Ready Net to use with it because I am paranoid about sleeping so close to the ground. Better safe than sorry! Just woke up and I slept sooooo good I literally woke up in the exact same position I went to sleep in. That never happens to me!!I live a very nomadic lifestyle due to my job and this is PERFECT for my needs. Folded up (and secured with bunjee cords since there are no handles or anything to keep it from unfolding when you carry it) it fit nicely in the back seat of my car (an Altima) along with a laundry basket. You can tilt the bottom toward the front seats and it doesn't interfere with your vision. My trip yesterday was only four hours but I still had no problems with it. I no longer worry about having to find a bed or couch to sleep on when I move, which is about every three months or so. I am so happy with this bed!!!

Worked well for a while, but the plastic threads stripped so now it's useless. Would not buy again.

The mattress is well made. It's pretty firm for me. I did add a memory foam topper, and it's still firm, but much better. As one other said, if you are a side sleeper, this may not be for you. It can definitely handle a large person. I'm 220 and it's no problem holding me up off the ground.

I'm not normally sensitive to plastic chemical odors and had read other customers complaints before my purchase. I figured I'd just air out the mattress like others suggested. The odor is incredibly intense though, at least in the mattress I purchased. It eventually had to be moved from the house to the garage during the air-out because it permeated every room when indoors. This thing stinks to high heaven. Much like a skunk if left indoors and just as difficult to remediate. Mine took at least 3 weeks air out time to be almost useable, but though there was a reduction in the odor, it still wasn't useable in an enclosed space, i.e., VW camper.There is a stated 30 day return policy provided by the seller, D&D Futon. I contacted them on day 29, and was sent a response back on day 30 that I was too late for a refund because the mattress was not returned to their facility by day 30! After many tries in pointing out how ridiculous this policy is, I eventually gave up. Consequently I lost $50 reselling on Amazon Seller Services as a "used item" which was brand new.I'm only giving this one star, because the size, loft, and seeming comfort would have made this a satisfactory item. If you purchase from this company be sure you can handle the "aired-out" version of the mattress within the short return period.

The foam bed is great. My only complain is that one of the zippers is stuck so there is no way I can wash the cover. I wrote to the manufacturer and he said it is not meant to be taken out to wash. So I guess I will have to be careful not to soil the cover. I use it as a cushion in the day and at night,as a bed. I put a I needed it urgently so did not return it...

I bought the shikibuton because as someone in a transitional life period I didn't want to buy a bunch of bulky furniture. I was looking for something that could act as a comfortable long-term bed and wouldn't take up a crazy amount of space when I move to my next home. Because it needed to be long-term I did go for the thicker 6 inch foam, for additional comfort I topped it with a 3 inch Tempurpedic mattress topper. It's been working out really well and when the bed is made it looks quite handsome.I read the reviews and was apprehensive of the smell that so many have written about. I didn't get knocked backward by any such aroma, it smelled like it had just come out of plastic packaging, nothing more. I left it partially unfolded on it's side for a few hours in a crossbreeze but slept on it that night with no objections from my olfactory glands.

I bought it for lengthy car camping trips, and for that it is perfect. But it is huge. Takes up most of the back seat even when folded. It's bigger than a human. But it's unbelievably comfortable. Would probably work great as a guest bed. And it does have a weird chemical smell at first.
