Excellent audio interface with lots of options
I bought this after many positive YouTube reviews as I wanted to replace my Yamaha AW16 Audio Workstation hardware with a software solution running on my PC and so I needed a high quality audio interface that would do multi-track recording into a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) running on the PC - in my case CuBase Elements 11.It has the most important controls on the front of the device, and it has many more controls implemented in software running on the PC. It connects to the PC through a USB cable and that also provides it with power. It can handle inputs at different levels: microphone, line and instrument. The sound quality is excellent with no noticeable noise on the meters. It provides monitoring output to both speakers and headphones each controlled separately. And it has a useful feedback system whereby I can play something in a browser, the sound going out to speakers through this device, but the device can be set to feed it back in again so that I can record it whilst it's playing.I also use it with Audacity. Although I bought it for use with a DAW, it will work with any recording and playback software although, depending on that software, the results might be the various inputs merged into a single audio track whereas in the DAW they result in separate tracks for each input.

Excellent
I've had this interface for 6 months or so. It is outstanding. Aside from the 4 inputs, which I use for 3 synths and an input for a microphone utilising a premium pre-amp and compressor, it has 4 outputs, which I use for monitors and one output for accessing the compressor as an external plugin for my DAW when needed, MIDI, which I use in conjunction with a MIDI merge and thru to allow input/output to the 2 synths with the best keybeds (would be nice if manufacturers would include more MIDI options but I think I might be a luddite in even considering MIDI over DIN these days), and a headphone socket. I've used the loopback mode, which works great, the pre-amps are good when I've had occasion to use them to mic a drum kit and aside from sometimes confusing software I literally can't fault it. You can plug the lot in, then just one cable to your laptop and you have everything available. I would like more inputs, but that's not the interfaces fault. There are other options I could have bought. Brilliant sound quality, imperceptible latency. Highly recommended.

Best interface I’ve ever used.
I’ve tried m-audio (pretty good), behringer (good for the money but limited performance) and rascal (awful) and I was sceptical about spending the extra on this. I’m not disappointed at all, this is easily the best interface I’ve ever used by a long way. Improved stability, achieved lower latency through smaller buffer then any other interface I’ve tried, and has loads of inputs and outputs. I went for this over the next model down as it saved money and an extra USB port being spent on a separate midi interface. Outstanding build quality and just all round a great interface. Highly recommended. Only thing I would improve is that there is no hardware control over input options (instrument/line, air, pad) and direct monitoring is only available in the control software but only a minor thing.

Well worth upgrading to 3rd Gen
I bought this 4i4 3rd Gen to replace my 6-year-old 6i6 1st Gen - and the difference is night & day. Latency in Reaper is way down, and the sound quality (recording and playback) is so much better. Setup was a breeze and very professional, and so far the ASIO driver is as solid as previous Focusrite versions. The Focusrite Control software is also a big improvement on the old Scarlett Mix Control - routing is more simple and the interface easier to navigate. Overall I can't praise this device highly enough - and it's half the size of the old one!

Nice, but comes with a weak headphone amp
Nice quality bit of kit. There are 2 manuals, one for the software and one for the scarlett itself, make sure you get the software one from the site, or you will be scratching your head.4 stars only because the headphones amplifier is weak.. I was hoping it would be able to drive my 250 ohm Beyerdynamic DT990's but it failed miserably.. (my Samsung S7 can drive them without a problem, so why can't this thing. 250 ohm headphones are not exactly exotic in the studio)The ability to record from other programs straight into your DAW is fun, especially if you want to mash up some tunes from your favourite streaming service. The Air feature is not worth bothering with, and I only went for this model over the 2i4 because it had midi ports and my midi interface was ready for retirement... Just EQ your recording, or push it through a few plugins, the air is a gimmick in my opinion.I was worried about the lack of switches on the front compared to the 2i4, but to be honest, once it's set up you don't really need them.. One input for guitar, one for. Mic, midi round the back, and don't forget that super weak headphone port on the front (drives my M50x's absolutely fine.. Just a shame it can't cope with a real pair of headphones)

Excellent product AND support
Just wanted to write a review as I previously owned a 2i2 for years with no issue and this 4i4 developed a rare hardware fault. The support team were really quick to respond and shipped out a new unit to me very promptly hassle free. Thanks focusrite 👍

Great audio interface
If you're thinking about getting an interface, you won't go far wrong with one of these.I opted for this over the 2i2, simply because I needed the extra input, as I need to feed in from a mixing desk.Great unit, doing exactly what I need, and at a price that hasn't broken the bank 😀

Very nice
Bought for the extra inputs after owning a two in put Presonus interface. This feels like quite a big step up in terms of quality of the pre amps. On vocals the ‘Air’ function really adds some nice top end, which means you don’t have to use too much EQ later on. The control app works well on both iPhone and iPad. Highly recommended.

It's popular for a reason
This is a great unit, comes with a generous software and instrument package.Gives you four input, four output and you can route your signal however you want. Also there is a loopback function to record your computer sounds, plus there's a 5pin midi IN/midi OUT connector for daisy chain your midi devices if you want. Also there is a headphone outputINPUTS2 x combi mic/instrument/line XLR inputs with 48V phantom power2 x 1/4"balanced fixed line inputsStereo Loopback Input1 x 5-pin MIDI inputOUTPUTS4 x 1/4" balanced line outputs1 x stereo headphone output1 x 5-pin MIDI output2 x Scarlett Mic Preamps with a wide 56 dB gain range and +22dBu maximum input levelDirect hardware monitoring in mono or stereoTHis is a USB bus powered unit (requires a port with at least 900mA) plug and play, just connect to your PC or Mac, connect your mics/instruments, set up routing in its sw and happy days.I am using it with a Samson Q2U XLR mic, and found the preamp has very low noise and with 75-80%(ish) gain it's perfect for spoken word applications. The preamps should easily drive an sm7b. The visul indicator for clipping is OK, it's around the gain knob and you can set it's colours but not the best way to check your levels (hello MOTU!), maybe it's personal preference, perfectly usable to avoid clipping. All in all it's a very capable little unit, small, easy to use, gives you plenty of options to record your thing.

AWESOME!
