Big Hit with My Five-Year-Old Thomas Fan
My son got this set for Christmas yesterday, and he's hardly stopped playing with it since then, so it gets high marks on the fun factor (at least on the relatively temporary fun factor, lol). The bridge drop really is pretty cool--even I like to watch it! :-) This set has some significant pros and cons, so it all comes down to what you're looking for in a train set. A little of our Thomas history as background: My son started out with wooden Thomas sets when he was very small. We have tons of wooden tracks, trains, and destinations, all of which my son still plays with, and those are my favorites in terms of ease of assembly, durability, and solid build. They also allow for the most open-ended track creation, and my son can easily assemble the wooden tracks in many formations on his own. We then ventured into Take-n-Play Thomas, which my son has enjoyed but we use mostly for traveling. Only recently have we ventured into Trackmaster Thomas. To be honest, while my son and I both prefer still wooden Thomas in many ways, we are enjoying these Trackmaster sets overall. From an adult perspective, the Trackmaster toys seem to be the cheapest in terms of build quality, but then again they are also some of the least expensive items available in terms of Thomas trains and tracks. Adult assembly is generally required with the Trackmaster sets, and many of the Trackmaster sets also seem very much like closed systems. They can be assembled only one way to work properly, and even connecting the sets to each other is difficult (sometimes impossible) due to the track layout. We have a couple other Trackmaster Thomas sets (the Deluxe Around-the-Tree set, which we love, and Misty Island Discovery, which we found pretty limited), and this set seems the worst in that particular regard. Here's a brief summary of what I see as the pros and cons of this set:PROS:* High marks on the fun factor overall* The bridge drop is particularly cool* Being able to change the points allows for multiple trains to go along two different paths* Boulder shoot and zip line are also fun features for kidsCONS:* Kind of a PITA to set up (the instructions are a bit vague and it takes a while regardless)* If it gets shifted too much, you wind up having to realign things a bit, or the bridge drop gets misaligned and the trains crash* Closed system that can be set up only one way, by an adultWhile the pros and cons are nearly equal, it's important to note that most of the cons of this set are cons for an adult but not so much for children. Since a child's enjoyment is the entire point, I'd say this set was well-worth the price of purchase (roughly $40 when we bought it). If you're a parent who is easily frustrated by involved assembly with poor instructions, you should probably avoid this one. But, if you can pour yourself a nice glass of wine or scotch and just be patient with getting everything set up, your kid will likely spend many hours enjoying the results.Edit: As another reviewer has pointed out, it actually is possible to connect another track set to this one by turning the two C1 curved pieces that rest flat on the floor outward, so I have edited this portion of my review. Thanks for the tip, BH! :)

3-year old loves it, but grandma has doubts
I am a fan of the Thomas Wooden Railway, so I had stash away my principles to break down and purchase this set. The grandson loves playing with it, but I am dismayed by all the rather ill-fitting pieces of plastic that make up the track layout. With some effort, we finally did get it together, but be warned -- this set is very large, measuring about 55" long and 32" wide. It takes up a lot of space -- rather more than the tabletop I imagined it would fit on. I am going to purchase a piece of plywood that I can cut down to about that size to fit over the table top, as it is hanging over the edges at the moment. Being a rather lightweight set, it is easily pushed over the edge during use. requiring partial reassembly. If it gets out of alignment, the cars don't run smoothly. However, the price was amazing (under $35) considering that I saw this set going for closer to $100 not that long ago. I'm just having a hard time making the switch from the classic wooden trains and track to these larger, more active motorized sets.

Love this set!
This is an awesome Thomas set! I did take a little doing to get the pieces together, as the instructions are a bit difficult, but I can't help but give it 5 stars! My boys (8, 7 and 4) absolutely adore this. It is interactive in that it needs some "kid power" to make Thomas stop and wait, load the boulder and then release the zip line. There are a lot of toys out there that do everything for you and children get bored because they aren't part of the play. This definitely requires involvement and it is wonderful!I have to say that the negative reviews about the pieces falling off are correct - if you don't snap them in to place. I have three VERY active boys using this set and there have been no pieces that have fallen off. It took about 45 minutes to set up. It would have been faster if I would have realized earlier that other than the track connectors themselves, there are additional plastic pieces on the sides of the towers and other connecting pieces that snap in to the track to hold it together. In my opinion, it was well worth the time to set up!

Other reviews were not quite right.
I was very hesitant to buy this train set, but it looks like a lot of fun. Be warned it does take up ALOT of space. It does not fit on either of our train tables and currently resides in the middle of our living room. However our son (2 1./2 yr old) LOVES it.Other reviews have said that it takes HOURS to this up. One review said that 3 grown men had trouble getting this together. It took me about 30 minutes to set up (without my son present...this might be the key). He has used the set for about a week and a few times I have had to reconnect the track but other than that it works fine.It is really neat how the track flips down from the top section to the bottom section and everytime a train goes down the "drop' my son yells....YAHHHHH

My kids love this
Pros: My 3 year old loves this set, but his 6 and 8 year old cousins also had a lot of fun with it. Though it is not recommended for early ages it didn't have any super tiny pieces to lose or that the 1 year old can pick up and eat. The whole jumping the track thing that the train does seems to never get old for any kids, and even works pretty well with his other motorized trains that are not from the Thomas Trackmaster collection.Cons: It definitely requires adult assembly and that can be frustrating for small kids that like to do things for themselves. A minor con for me that might be a pro for some people - this thing is huge once assembled. We have a sizable train table and it hangs off the end by several inches.

My son loves it! He is 3 and can play with it himself, and knows to take care playing with it otherwise it can fall apart. Would not recommend for under 3 years as this can be a very annoying to both child and parent having to fix constantly if not handled properly. Lots of fun - takes time to build so don't start shortly before bed...

Not all trackmaster trains work on this set
Set is really neat but no other trains seem to be able to get traction other than the one train it came with. I guess all trackmaster are not compatible with all sets?? Very frustrating Christmas!

Loves it
My son just loves this toy track! It tends to break apart easily if not assembled properly. Your kid will love it though

I loved the variety of products available. Will definitely shop again.
This is the tallest TrackMaster set ever made, bringing Train-play to new heights with a two-foot mountain. The play set comes with a complete loop of winding mountainous track, two working cranes, and the main feature is a breathtaking drop-bridge that drops the engine down onto the tracks just before he steams over the edge. The child can use the cranes to load and unload rocks at the quarry, and then use the switch track to send the engine around the mountain track or up to the drop-bridge.
