Excellent for EMUelec. S905W Chip handles classic video game emulation very well! Great Value.
I have been purchasing Android boxes with Amlogic chips in them to run EMUelec on them, a free but powerful video game emulation program. This X96 Mini Android TV Box is excellent for price and performance. There are slightly more powerful chips available than the one this X96 Mini Android TV Box is using, the Amlogic S905W, but the combination of the S905W chip and 2 Gigs of RAM onboard make this a very capable and powerful classic gaming platform. This device can run PlayStation 1 very well, along with nearly every classic game console and many classic computers. It has numerous issues with many Nintendo 64 games, which is common in emulation. It can kinda-sorta handle some Dreamcast stuff like Capcom vs SNK 2 and Marvel vs Capcom 2... but even then you can tell it's really chugging and really intense 3D games don't really run well at all. Don't buy this box for PSP emulation, either because while you may be able to get some low-end, undemanding PSP games to sort-of half run, but I'm not sure what kind of fun you can get out of playing a PSP game at 15 frames per and all sorts of graphical artifacts. Oh well. You can not really beat the value of performance for the price of this X96 Mini Android TV Box.Even if you just buy it to use as a vanilla Android TV box, it is good for that, too. It's Android 9 and it is more than capable. The interesting thing about this X96 Mini Android TV Box is its actual physical size. It's TINY. Like a little black square not much bigger than half a deck of poker cards. It has literally 1/3 the footprint of another S905W box I picked up recently. Quite compact. It has an HDMI port, and an AV out port, an Ethernet port, and a micro SD slot (for your EMUelec or what have you), a USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 port... and for some reason they are all upside down. Yeah, the HDMI, Ethernet ports and the USB ports are upside down for some reason, not that it does anything to hamper the performance because it doesn't. I also think this little square is very handsome. This is a good Android box. I recommend it.

Works good, mouse on remote not so much.
The andriod box and remote work pretry good. The good : decent memory powers on and off good easy to download more appsHas a internet browser and Google play store.Pretty easy to use.The bad : the only thing that I don't like is the mouse on the remote doesn't work like it should. You can use it but it doesn't move all over the screen like it should. So I plugged in a keyboard/mouse remote I have and that didn't help either. I was about to give up and send it back. But I tried my mouse that I have for my laptop and was able to do everything I needed to with it.It plays movies and TV shows great. Netflix works YouTube works pretty much everything works. All other functions with the remote work as they should. The remote didn't come with batteries you'll need 2 aaaCome with an hdmi cable as well. It's not a very long one so if you need a longer one you'll have to get one.All in all it does its job well.

Needs different power supply to use 2TB spinning hard disk
Overall this is a decent little TV box. I wanted to put a large collection of media on a 2TB WD Elements backup drive (spinning platter) and connect to this box to play media. I connected the hard drive, and video would play, but fast forwarding through media would cause a clicking noise from the hard disk and then the whole unit would crash and reboot. This device comes with a 2 Amp 5 Volt power supply. That's theoretically about 10 Watts of power available. I hooked up my Kill-a-watt meter and saw that when the hard drive was being access it was showing 10 to 11 Watts, so it was exceeding what the power supply could do. So I purchased this 3 Amp 5 Volt power supply to see if it would work: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0745BZV6T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It worked! Interestingly enough, the power consumption with this power supply maxes out around 7 Watts. So not only does it work, it also works and uses less power, is stable, and can drive a spinning media hard disk.To update Kodi on the system I had to sign into a google account I made just for this box (not knowing what is installed on this that might snoop passwords and such) and then remove the existing Kodi, and install from the Play store. It installed fine and works great. The remote control behavior is a bit odd with fast forward and such, but usable if you play with it.

Apps can't be updated. Won't allow return.
Right out of the box the apps are prompting for updates, which is normal/expected, but when I clicked through for the very first one, Netflix, the app store says it's no longer supported. So there is no update option. Now Amazon is saying I can't return this and I'm out $50. Don't waste your money.

Live TV & Speedy Device
Out of the box this unit just needs to be plugged in and signed into with a google account. Once I was signed in it was easy to update KODI, etc and start watching TV. This is the latest Android TV interface so it was smooth and simple to navigate. The menus are quick and changing from source to source was nearly instant on my Altice Optimum connection. I was even able to screen share from my android phone which was really convenient. It didn't always recognize portrait to landscape switches but it was a very nice feature. For the cost its a great value and you can even add additional storage to the unit so you can download stuff offline. I plugged in a small portable SSD and it worked perfectly!
