There is nothing worse than buying an expensive Prime Rib Roast and overcooking ...
I didn't have high expectations for this, but I am pleasantly surprised. I rarely submit reviews but this one has earned it. After getting this and using it about 4-5 times,I now have a lot of confidence in cooking meet and I look forward to cooking since I know I will get the exact doneness I want. This is a big deal since I was always worried in the past about overcooking or undercooking the meat. There is nothing worse than buying an expensive Prime Rib Roast and overcooking it, which I have done more than once. Very expensive mistake and embarrassing/frustrating when you are cooking for others. It's only takes an extra 10 degrees to overcook expensive meat so having an accurate and reliable thermometer is a must. The only thing I wish is different on this unit is the cord roll doesn't currently onto the base unit. As it is, they hold together for storage by a magnet and the magnet isn't very strong, but this is a very minor issue. The two parts are only put together for storage so it doesn't effect the function of the device at all. The unit itself connected easily to my iphone and the app display/features (free to download) are very nice. Although it's fairly small compared to my old Williams/Sonoma digital probe thermometer, it seems fairly sturdy and rugged. I expect it to last a long time. The LED status light is nice since this shows you the current status of your meet and also demonstrates that it's on. It's also nice that it signals you 10 degrees before your target doneness. This gives you time to get back to the meat before it overcooks. I have found the temperature to be spot on accurate. The probe also seems well constructed. The probe is what broke on my old thermometer which cost twice as much as this one. This one is better constructed. Overall I am delighted with this. I know that I will be able to cook meat perfectly every time. It's valuable to point out that if you want perfect doneness, you need to pull out the meat before it reaches the perfect temperature because meat usually continues to cook a little after you take it out. This is especially true for roasts(8-10 degrees more) and less so on steaks because they are thinner(2-4 degrees). Anyone who has experience cooking meat has learned this already, but it's important to point out that the device does not account for how the meat will continue to cook. It only tells you what the current temperature is. So you should do your own research on grilling/roasting to learn effective cooking methods. The thermometer doesn't make you a good cook, but if you know the basics for cooking meat, this is a very valuable tool to be able to cook meat perfectly. Very pleased.

Great concept, faulty execution
Used it on Thanksgiving with pretty good results. The concept is great, but the actual product feels like it's still in beta testing. The good: It's conceptually simple to use: turn it, on pair it with your smartphone, insert the probe in the meat, and sit inside sipping a glass of wine while you check on the meat's progress without getting up. It has a cool chart that shows the temperature by the minute so you can get a good feel for how fast it's cooking. That's something you don't get with a manual thermometer. The not so good: The pairing is very glitchy. When I put it in the turkey the first time, it lost the bluetooth connection even though the phone was in my pocket. Trying to turn it on or off is confusing, as there's an indicator light that shows the various modes that works well inside but is all but impossible to see outside in the sunshine. And even inside I'm not sure if it's on or off. (I hope it's off now that it's put away in a drawer, but I'm really not sure.)Once I finally got it going - something about the app being in the background as opposed to the foreground that I still don't really understand - it still has issues. For some reason the app only displayed the cooking temp when I was holding my phone. As soon as I put it down the temp went away. This may have had to do with the bluetooth connection, that is, holding it helped the connection I think. The advertised range of 150' is fantasy. I got about 35-40' at best, admittedly the signal had to go through a door and wall or two. So maybe 150' would work if you had pure line of sight, i.e., no walls or doors, but that's not reality, for me anyway. I think wifi connectivity would be MUCH better because then I could use it anywhere where I have a signal, which would give me about 10 times the range of this unit.I tried calling tech support to figure out some of this stuff, but they were closed. I get that it was Thanksgiving, but I'd guess that many of these are first used on holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fathers Day and weekends in general. So the company ought to consider having customer support when people are actually using their products. One other feature I'd like to have is the additional temperature of the grill atmosphere, that is, like an oven thermometer since I need to know that too.Overall, for less than $40, this is an ok deal. I'd be much more excited about it if it didn't have so many glitches getting it up and running.
