Great for General Chemistry.
Been using this book for several terms now for my general chemistry sequence and it was a little cheaper than buying it at the campus bookstore. Very satisfied with the purchase. Tro does a great job walking through the problem solving and using real world examples, but I've found that problems can ask you to find a given variable in an equation and the book may never give an example like that. So the book is good but you won't see every kind of problem i.e. it might be up to you to rearrange the equation. This is not a fault of the book just expect to have to do some critical thinking as they don't spoon feed you everything.

Good Book (I ordered a used bad one)
The content of this book is very good, illustrations, examples all good. I also bought the solutions manual. I bought a used one for only 4$, it said it was in bad condition (but I didn't see that). The binding on mine is coming apart,,BUT and this is big, only a few pages have highlighting--which makes me happy, and for $4 for a $160 New, its overall good. recommend this for a First Chemistry Textbook

Amazon RENTAL
Got this as a rental for college kid. When I checked back about a month after renting it, I found that I could have purchased it for almost the same price. I called and was able to speak with a real person who wasn't in India. They were very helpful, very nice, and immediately lowered my rental price and sent a refund to satisfy me. The book was in delivered on time and in good condition. After you figure out where the rental section of books is on the Amazon website, it's easy to get the return label printed off. The whole rental system seems new and a little harder to navigate compared to other websites, but will do when you're looking for to save money. Amazon needs to make it easier to navigate the rental process before I try it again.

what is most galling is the author's point of view that he has to write a text that is challenging even for the best of students
I bought into the 2nd edition and I can only wonder why there is a 3rd edition. This is not about chemistry, it's about business and profits. A student may have no choice (of course) if this is the assigned text for their chemistry course. They're stuck. But, what is most galling is the author's point of view that he has to write a text that is challenging even for the best of students.Hogwash.A chemistry textbook should be about making it EASY to understand chemistry, not making it as hard as it can possibly be. Understand the author's motivation, to weed out as many students as possible from the field of chemistry. Really. Actually, there's plenty of time to weed out students in a four-year chemistry program. A first-year course should give a student a fair chance at learning enough chemistry as they may need. From experience, the content of the first-year course will include things that a student may never see again, while completing his chemistry major. I bought this book for reference, It may serve my purpose, but I pity the poor student who has to suffer through this. I got my chemistry degree in 1980. I thought by now there would be a lot of on-line videos and/or accompanying DVDs to illustrate and demonstrate what would be in a textbook. No, it's not about education, it's all about manipulation, business, and money.

BETTER than OpenStax
I was using the openstax FREE textbook for my college chemistry course. Until we arrived at the equilibrium chapter, I was happy with OpenStax. The students did, however, appreciate the PDF printed out. I have since switched to Tro and everyone is happier. It is written in a more understandable language and the text is much more clear.

PERFECT CONDITION
Pay no attention to the one star reviews. I'm not denying that the 1st edition is probably equivalent to this 3rd edition (I'm just getting what my professor asks for) and even if it is, there's no reason to give this book 1 star. Give it one star on the author's page, not on an amazon rental review! You should only be reviewing the quality the book came to you in, and for me it's great! no watermarks, no ripped out pages, spine is sturdy,no writing. Just what I was looking for!
