A comprehensive and riveting review of the new worldwide digital surveillance
The book has three major sections. The first section details the capabilities of the digital imaging revolution in continuous aerial and satellite surveillance that has been deployed or is being deployed today. The second, a detailed discussion of what is technically feasible and on the drawing boards for deployment in the next few years. Both are comprehensive and clear about the good and the bad of this revolution, The third section is a call to action as to what we should do about all this from a policy standpoint, and I found less interesting. Overall, though, it is a great read and educational about the arrival of "big brother".

Wide Area Surveillance practice
Covers the growth and implementation on wide angle surveillance as used by military and police forces. The growth in these capabilities, persistent wide angle, poses a serious challenge to privacy and security for individuals. Not quite sure I agree with all the doom and gloom approaches as I can see the increase in the security offered. The other side is one has to worry about warrant-less searches, or possibly harassing people who saw an event but have not come forward as a witness.Overseas, in our foreign intelligence roles, this options is exceptional for work like counter-terrorism, and counter-narcotics in permissive environments. Unfortunately, as the author points out, once these systems are possible, and pervasive, as most use commercial technology. The technology is out there, this book steps through who is using it, and where. A great quick read, and recommended for anyone working in privacy or intelligence.

Orwellian
Very informative. Great detail on the aerial operations of America's surveillance state. Anyone interested in the protection of civil liberties, freedom and democracy should read this book.

Legal surveillance, live feeds, historical feeds available if recorded.
Fascinating book. This technology was developed to identify who was planting IEDs by tracking all movements in the area over time. Big brother, or anybody, can not only record your every move, track you by car, phone or who you hang around with. Cities using this tech can send separate live and historical feeds to police (determine who committed crime, where they came from and where they went afterwards.) fire (monitor any fire from beginning to end) and anybody/organization who wants to monitor recorded actions. Civil liberty concerns have been identified and some cities refuse to use this technology. Legally there is no problem as the actions recorded are committed in public space. Interestingly, Juarez Mex stopped using this when some of the criminals were recorded coming back to the police station. lolAdditional algorithms identify potential suspects to track. Who visited a restaurant outside of regular hours/did a u-turn/exceeded speed limit/visited a certain house/business/person.Planes/drones, flying overhead, record using using thousands of 'cell phone' camera type technology, stitched together, aligned to true north constantly. The data way exceeds 6 DVDs per second.Once a government project, now available to the public. I can only wonder how far it has advanced after this book.

Conversation starter but only small part of current debates
This book is broken up into three sections: 1) Technology development and the use of the Gorgon Stare program, 2) stories of how aerial surveillance is being used and the critiques of it in the US, and 3) where the technology is evolving and what concerns and regulatory issues should be thought about. The author was using the first two sections to lead up to his concerns and viewpoints in the last section. While he was trying to be objective, I would have liked to have seen more interviews and quotes from people who have been impacted by the technology and how the technology can be used for something other than law enforcement activities. The topics of law enforcement surveillance are even more relevant now than when the book was written and released as the public is more and more aware of law enforcement activities. This is such a small part of the current debates but does provide a good conversation starter.

Crucial Reporting on the Emerging Surveillance Order
This book is the most current and informative source on Wide Area Motion Imagery and related technologies, as first developed by the US military and currently deployed by not only armed forces but police departments, municipal governments, and corporations. It's lively and accessible. The treatment isn't scholarly or theoretical but it is based on excellent original reporting and the commentary is politically acute. For those interested in the changing face of warfare or the emerging forms of surveillance and their dangers, this is book is essential reading.

A definitive work on the development of persistent surveillance technologies.
If you have ever had the slightest concern or interest in the apparatus of government surveillance capacities, you need to read this book. It is a monumental introduction to the subject of persistent surveillance for the layperson. This technology is unavoidably coming to a major city near you, Michel presents the concerns and benefits this emerging field offers. This is not just about surveillance, but marketing, environmentalism, the possibilities are endless and potentially haunting in the most Orwellian fashion.
