Better IEPs: How to develop legally correct and educationally useful programs

YOU are an integral part of your child’s education
An excellent book that’s created with language that’s easy to understand. For parents and educators alike. I suggest ordering the kindle edition as the same ISBN was used for all hard copies, therefore you may not receive the correct edition if ordering a hard copy. That happened to me.Wow, I had no idea the role I can play in my child’s education. I am an integral part. I’ve trusted the educational team in the past, trust they had my child’s best interest in mind, that they knew what was best. My husband and I would share our perspectives during IEPs, what we wanted, but time and time again we were ramrodded. Basically, the IEP team moved forward with what they wanted, and that was the end. This book has shown us that our voices are important, that we are part of the IEP team, that we are a very important part of creating an educational setting that is beneficial to our son. There are also several direct references to the law, which is great so we can go to the school with factual information.

Very useful and informative book
This is a terrific book. It gives a lot of practical advice of how to write a legally-correct document. The importance of this is two-fold: to give students the best resources for their unique disabilities and to protect against lawsuits that can multiply if school-districts compose IEPs in an incorrect manner. The book is written in accessible language (just as they advise writing IEPs in clear language.) There are useful case-studies. There are models of well-written documents as well as examples of poorly-constructed IEPs that will likely fail under intense legal scrutiny. The authors convey a lot of important things to consider. They are dubious of the common practice of using percentages in measurable goals. They point out that many districts come up with formulaic ways of constructing IEPs that are designed with minimal effort and for the sake of convenience and cost-effectiveness to districts. The authors greatly encourage parental participation in the process in order to get the most accurate picture of individual needs and learning differences of students. This is a great book and I learned a lot. The authors guide the educator in developing sound IEP's based on comprehensive testing, not just one indicator (such as the popular Woodcock-Johnson test.) The process is well-defined and common pitfalls are identified. This is one of the most useful educator books I've ever read.

Very Sturdy
It wasn't the easiest to install and you have to be very careful when opening it as the ipad will tend to want to fall out. I don't think it will be easy to steal the ipad as you'd have to really rip it off the wall. It appears to be very durable.

Keeping it as a reference book.
Book was a required reading for a class for my SPED license, however I will be keeping this one around as a reference book.Easy read, clear and helpful information for the whole IEP process.Bought the book as NEW. Received it and it appeared to be new (binding not broken, no rips) however on pg 41 there is a little red square that has clearly has been drawn by someone (not a printing issue). So this is obviously a sellers issue not a product issue.

Very relevant information
Although not particularly exciting, this book has great information and no fluff so everything is important. Both my education teacher and my mom who works in special education said this is NOT a book to sell back at the end of the class. It is a good resource to use when there are any question on how to write a successful IEP.

An excellent primer on drafting IEPs
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any parent who has a child in special education. If you are looking for a book to understand and even draft IEPs, this is debatably the best, clearest book out there.Reviewing and drafting IEPs can be very daunting. This book helps the reader (whether parent, school official, or legal professional) understand the IEP process. After reading this book, any parent will be able to better understand their child's IEP and even be able to write them.

not the correct book
I ordered the 5th edition and I received the 4th which is not what I need for class. I’m incredibly upset and angry.
