Refurbished savings, requires a micro SD for updates
I have had the Garmin drive 51 previously on the refurbish scheme and the drive 61 is much the same.Out of the box setup to complete I added a 16gb Micro SD (takes 4-32gb) and the map update is about 7gb so plenty of future expansion. The updating software (link on the internal memory) is very straight forward and if you have a decent laptop/desktop there are several small updates (some need the unit to re-start after) and then the map update that typically takes 20 mins to 30 approx. (depening on your broadband). The optional Basecamp program from Garmin is great to view/copy/backup saved places on your current device or from a previous satnav move saved journeys or share your waypoints and journeys even from friends or family. On the whole the 12v charge lead for car is of good length for most cars. The USB cable supplied is a bit on the short side and probably fine but only being a standard fitting (older camera port type) the longer cables are cheap and easy to get. Well done again Garmin.

Always use Garmins
Lifetime updates, great size screen and better for the environment as it's second hand. You may need a memory card for larger map updates

A bit fiddly, and very awkward on cabling, but overall OK.
First impression was very good, nice looking annd a lot bigger than my old TomTom XL. First problem came when plugging it into the car's existing USB power block, it didn't like it at all, wouldn't switch on. BUT when I used the chunky cigarette lighter plug cable it worked perfectly, go figure. But hey ho, such is life. It works fine, only two voices, havent looked at adding any more or even if you can add more....Map update for all of Europe needs a MicroSD card, I plugged a 8GB card in and it loaded the 7GB map quickly and without any problems. Display is, as I say, very large, volume is good, touch screen is a little twitchy, a firm finger is what's needed :) The ball mount clamp is excellent, sticks to the windscreen really solidly.Overall very good, but 4 stars due to power cabling issues.

Touch screen need to be more sensitive
The product works perfect without any issues as it is been a renewed one. Only thing I free that needs improvement is the touch screen sensitivity. Hence 4 stars.

Unreliable & disappointing
Had an old Garmin sat nav which was very happy with but the screen was starting to get a pink tint, so couldn't see the mauve route.Firstly, Garmin haven't loaded many routes so you need to update for a couple of hours. Secondly, the Garmin Express you have on your PC to do this is slow & clunky. It also does not give much info when things don't go right with the install. My old sat nav required an sd card after a few updates as it rub out of space. Lucky I experienced this as that's what this new one needed from the start. However, there's nothing to tell you this and the screen just states install failed after many attempts.Thirdly, the device, screen doesn't respond instantly to touch. Not easy to scroll by dragging, have to use the up/down arrows which throws you back in time. Even my 6 year old sat nav was better.Once you program in a post code & house name/number the next screen just shows your starting point. So stupid as not all postcodes given out by people are correct and for me I like to check the street info tallies up with what I want. My first outing with it was a mix of good & bad. The screen was clear & bright, the information pertinent. However, when starting up in the middle of Bristol to go to my next destination it shut down 3 times in a row just after I put in the details & pressed GO. It was just after it calculated the route. Wow, how crap when you approach a junction & it cuts out for the 3rd time. Worked ok for a while after that, which I hoped was because it was the first time used & it was part of the update. However, was not to be. After a little time of normal use it started shutting down again.Overall my experience was poor with this. Even it worked fine (assuming I had a rogue device) the screen is slow to respond to touch & operates like a very early generation of touch screen which has just been developed. I also don't like the menu, not intuitive & not easy to get the item you want quickly. That's a personal thing really. So after 3 weeks it's going back. Let's see what Navpal is like now.Amazon return policy is brilliant and I comment them for this.

A GOOD PURCHASE
Despite a few reservations about buying a refurb,I am happy with this sat nav.You need to charge it up first for a few hours, via the USB lead to your PC.(No wall charger supplied).Next you need to download Garmin Express software via your PC,which also included the Manual. So far so good.

The Sat nav did not have enough memory to hold all the info available in a downloaded update.
