DOSING INFO ON PACKAGING IS INCOMPLETE
My pediatrician suggested that my 4 month old start supplemental iron,. so I bought these drops and followed the dosing instructions on the box. The directions are simply to administer 1 mL (15 mg elemental iron), without reference to the age of the child. Being a nurse, I wondered if I was giving the correct dosage -- babies and children often require dosages based on body weight. I did a little research and found that according to several sources including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the dosage is 1 Mg/kg/day. So my child who is 14 lbs ( 6.4 kg) only needs 6.4 Mg of iron per day. That's a little under half the dose they suggest on the package. Not sure why the package doesn't at least offer a range of different dosages based on age/weight (like baby Tylenol does). Instead it says "USE FULL DOSAGE" and I can't for the life of me figure out why. You probably won't poison your child by following the instructions on the box, but iron is not readily excreted by the body, so it's best to check the dosage with your doctor. Also, since baby really does not like the flavor, it's much easier to give the smaller dose than the full 1 mL. I don't use the 1 mL dropper that it comes with -- it's long and skinny and you have a long column of liquid to struggle with. I use a larger (fatter) dropper (a 3 mL dropper/syringe).And for what it's worth, the product listing says " no artificial colors, dyes, or flavors" but it does have preservative Sodium Metabisulfite, as well as (may contain) Sodium Hydroxide (lye) to adjust pH. I haven't the faintest whether this matters or not....but when it comes to babies, less is more -- the fewer mystery ingredients, the better. On the plus side, this product is quite a bit cheaper than Enfamil Fer-In-Sol ($15 for 3 pack vs. $24 for 2 pack -- both 50 ml bottles), the ingredients are virtually identical (except no Sodium Hydroxide in Enfamil).
