I really enjoyed this book. The use of maps to illustrate historical stages in the development of New York was a brilliant idea & brought to life what might otherwise have been quite hard work.

new-york: des rues toutes droites (sauf une), des quartiers carrés, un paquet d'arbres au milieu... pas fan des atlas, new-york, de par sa composition géométrique se prête merveilleusement bien à un voyage par la géographie. retrouver les formes de la ville inspirées par l'histoire m'a beaucoup plu. (à complèter avec un livre sur les meilleurs burgers :-))

I am writing a novel that takes place in part in Manhattan in the late 1800s. This book is so full of the information I need. I've lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan for about 35 years. I thought I knew a lot about their history, but I am learning so much more. The reading is not weighed down, there are plenty of maps and illustrations. The book, The Historical Atlas of New York City is a wonder investent.
