Q: is there a way to order this bracket and mounting hardware (i.e. the extra piece and mounting tape) but WITHOUT the sun shade?

Yes, search "summit link" and they offer just the clamp and tripod mount w/o the shade or $19

I have a Nexus tablet that measures 8x4.5 inches and it works well. You can fit a 9" device at most..as far as the width of your device you can go more than 4.5 inches easy but you cannot go any LESS than the 4.5 inches otherwise it will not hold it in place. Hope this helps
