Yes, if the meatballs are small. Not good for big ones.

can they grab hot stuff?

yes they can grab hot stuff. pretty much anything. they have little teeth at the end. However they do break easily so have extras ready. If you hold to low to the end it breaks, hold up in center higher to food. I was using daily for children to self serve foods, I went to a white one that was more sturdy. But if just using for the day, event these are fine yes, hot / cold
