Great Start
Coach Dorrance is an absolute legend! This book seems like a great compass, but not the “blueprint” I would’ve thought. The exercises (laid out in the appendix) are really good, but the layouts/schematics require some guesswork (eg, distances are based on field lines, and goal boxes). This can/may be a bit of an issue if you use public parks, indoor facilities (unmarked), or just don’t have a “good” field to work/play on. Another issue: there’s an assumption that coaches/teams have a track to use for fitness “tests”. (You could probably use a road so long as you properly measure & mark out the distance/s).If you have an established high school or college (or academy) team and good fields/facilities then this book will definitely be helpful. The background and stories are good for team building and development, as is how he uses data.If you have the capabilities & an “established” team, then this book can be a good “blueprint”. Otherwise, it’s a good “how I did it” book.I’d say, buy it and keep reviewing it throughout your coaching/playing journey.

Good Read for any sport
I'm not a soccer coach but I respect what Anson has done as a coach so I wanted a deeper look. I liked reading about his coaching philosophies and what his expectations are. Good read for any sport.

Great book for all coaches!
This book was written by one of the most successful collegiate coaches in any sport in history. It's written with an emphasis on soccer, but the lessons and advice are applicable for any sport at any level.

Must Have for your coaching library
Hard to believe I have gone so long without this book in my coaching library. More for advanced coaches as it drills into how to manage teams (females) and gender differences. The Competitive Cauldron was worth the price of admission alone.

Future of Coaching
I've only coached men's college teams, but I'm convinced Anson's principles represent a foundation for the future of coaching -- for athletes of either sex. Competition is fun and practices need to be fun. The days of drill sergeant as coaching model are over.Kids from most countries now have hundreds of choices in terms of different sports and entertainment. Every minute of practice needs to be fun or they'll do something else. And it's only going to get worse.Obviously the "competitive caldron" can create women's US college soccer champions (UNC won the title again in 2000), but it may also be our best chance to lure the upcoming Sega generation into team sports.

Good intro to coaching the female player
An instruction book. Not much in terms of drill specifics but lots about coaching female players, personalities and pushing for performance. L

Highly recommend this book for any girl playing travel soccer at a high level, and/or their parents. The dedication and committment of the girls in the UNC program is extreme. Players will find this book to be very motivational.

More than just soccer
Simply a great book on coaching. Whatever sport. Anson does a fine job helping coaches motivate young people. Love how he doesn't care about the politically incorrect correctness. Women are wonderfully made different and men also different.
