Love this book!
I could not put this book down! My husband and I are new to cycling and live in Missouri. This book is a great representation of the Katy Trail and it’s communities. Love that this book has both the story of his experience riding the trail as well as a guide to assist the reader with planning a trip of his/her own. So glad I bought this book! Great job Neil!

A Bicyclist's View of Small Town America
This book departs from the format of his earlier books of his cross-country bicycle journey, focusing on one trail only. The guide at the beginning seems to provide good information should I decide to attempt the Katy Trail and the story that follows makes me want to attempt it. While this book was not as full of the varied small life lessons as his other writings, the re-creation or recounting of his conversations ring true and are often thought-provoking. It is also a nice story of a couple getting to know each other on a new level. A quick entertaining read.

And the Author's philosophy included.
I enjoyed the book and the way it was broken down into two sections. I personally would have liked more information on camping sites. I would recommend the book to anybody interested in riding the trail.

Katy Trail Travel Guide/Journal
Cycling the Katy Trail written by Neil M. Hanson is a combination Travel Guide and Travel Journal. I chose Hanson's book because it had a more recent publication date than any other guide that I saw about the Katy Trail on the internet. Experience has taught me that restaurants and B&Bs appear and disappear with frequency, so I wanted the most up to date guide. However, the book leans more towards the travel journal side of the equation than travel guide. There are far fewer restaurant and lodging recommendations as general commentary on topics outside the realm of cycling, much less cycling the Katy Trail.Having cycle toured extensively, albeit mostly in Europe, I am familiar with the necessity of packing the day's nutrition and fluid requirements on my bike each morning. However, Hanson spent a great deal of effort identifying where one could refill their water bottles and buy coffee along the route. Since my husband is handicapped and has limited mobility off of his Catrike, I was hoping for a little more detail about the trail itself. Oddly enough I got more specific trail information from reading Robert Shoop's novel Peril on the Katy Trail.Overall, I enjoyed the book and will use the "Milestones" table and scattered recommendations as we plan our tour for this summer. Hanson's reference to washed out and flooded sections of the trail is good to note given this year's (2019) flooding. However, the book does not meet all of our requirements and we will have to source the information elsewhere. Even so, I will probably also buy Hanson's upcoming Cycling the Natchez Trace.

Good book
I liked the format that included details to aid in planning a ride along the Katy trail and the story of his adventure. He is a good writer, easy to read and yet formulated a good descriptive picture in my mind as to the true experience. I liked it.

Lovely read
I enjoy where my mind goes when I’m on a long ride, sometimes to quite unexpected places. The author very graciously shares many of his thoughts and opinions and since I’m around the same age I can certainly relate and feel his joy for that wonderful act of peddling down the road and allowing the mind as well as the body to experience new things. I heartily recommend this book!

A Great Guide and Then Some
This book offers an excellent guide regarding infrastructure and amenities while bicycling the Katy Trail. But it also offers a glimpse into the culture of the small towns along the trail, and even some very good insight as to how and why our country has become so divided. It is also very well written. I heartily recommend it on all levels.
